Default Steve Cronin to Portland

I spoke to Steve last night and he informed me he was being sent to Portland of the USL. I for one am sorry to see him go. I would have liked to see what he could do with a real defence in front of him. Apart from that Steve has always shown himself to be a class guy and will be missed.

My best wishes to Steve as he embarks on his journey. You'll be back in the bigs soon.

Thanks for the update. That answers some questions about our GK depth chart. He was a decent MLS keeper, but his salary was too high for what he could bring.

Thanks for the news. I also would have liked to see what he could do with some defense in front of him. Probably better for him to play in Portland than spend a season on the bench behind Ricketts even though it means there's a good chance the Galaxy are giving up on another player who will probably go on to play well elsewhere.

I wonder if there's any chance he will come back to the Galaxy in 2010 after a stellar season in 2009 in Portland. He will probably be headed to DC United or Chivas. <sigh>

So just to be clear on how this works:

1) We no longer hold his MLS rights, correct? Any team could now swoop in and take him to MLS if they wanted to and had the roster/cap space to sign him?

2) Last year he signed a new more lucrative contract for multi years. Does this just get voided? I.e., is there no protection for a player? Kinda harsh to go from $100k to USL salary.

Any MLS rules/roster experts out there that know how this works?

I for one am mostly just pissed off more about last year. We suffered through a guy who learned on the job just to jettison. that's not smart. This year could have been the payoff for last years struggles.

I hear what your saying Mbar, but Steve had stone hands. The experience helped, but he spilled balls a college keeper should hold. Good shot stopper, but my guess is we dropped maybe 5 points from our keepers las year. Can you afford a 100K back up in our league. His number was up as soon as we signed Rickets.

Bye. He cost us half of the lost in the last season. Cannot say I miss him.

I still want Joe Canon back but well.
