Random downtime question that I stole from the local radio show up here in C-Town this morning: Whose 4 faces would you put on the Columbus Crew Mt. Rushmore?
This is a no win category. No one is going to completely agree on the same four faces. I agree with Lamar and Frankie, but what about Coach Fitzgerald? Or Coach Bobby from his playing days???
There are a lot of names that could be put there. I think Robert and Guille deserve some consideration. Robert is an original Crew man, player and now head coach and to me that is pretty special. Guillermo, despite the fact he has only played two and soon to be three season, I think carved his name into Crew lore with his performance last season culminating with the Cup. A more entertaining discussion might be a Crew "Hall of Shame" where the likes of Eric Denton would be enshrined for all time.
McBride ceded any claim he had to his spot when he suited up in red last November. Frankie, Guille, Hunt, John.
It would be far easier to settle on people, wouldn't it? My vote goes to Denton, Mark Williams, Andrulis, and Sanneh.
Isn't that five faces? My four: 1. Lamar Hunt 2. Guille 3. Frankie 4. Warzycha I'm undecided on the fourth, for pure Crewness, McBride is a DQ due to his choosing the Fire. I don't want 2 guys with short tenures, so no Stern either. Cunny is a DQ same as McBride. I'd take one of the guys from the early team: Mike Clark, Mais, or Robert. Player and two time head coach, all-star, international. I'll go with Robert for the 4th. I wouldn't mind Brad Friedel either. Or Fitz. Hall of Shame: 1. Caligiuri 2. Razov (he was right about Andrulis though, wasn't he?) 3. Timo Liekoski 4. Sanneh (not for the PK, but for his comments about Marshall)
How about a Mt. Cultmore for the Crew. You know, guys who had a cult following despite a limited, or short, careers. My four: 1. Freddy Garcia (thanks for the Open Cup) 2. Ubusuku Abuskusumo 3. Mario Gori 4. Ansil Elcock (thanks for Stern John) Other good choices: Tenywa Bonseau, Sneaky Pete Marino, Macello Carerra, Ricardo Iribarren, Matt Kmosko.
My first instinct is to say Duncan has almost too good a career to be on Mt. Cultmore. Tenure is too long, way too many starts. Elcock probably is too, I shouldn't have put him there. Mt. Cultmore is for fringe guys only. Or one or two year wonders. I know Duncan is a fringe player now, but it certainly wasn't always so. Hmm, I guess I need to think out some better criteria for Mt. Cultmore. I was originally thinking guys like Gori and Ubusuku. But Duncan certainly does have a cult following (me included). OK, you talked me into it: Mt. Cultmore: 1. Duncan Oughton 2. Ubusuku Abuskusumo 3. Mario Gori 4. Freddie Garcia Or: Sneaky Pete, The Maestro, Elcock, Rob Smith.
I'm in no place to name a four. I haven't been in Columbus since the inception. So, I'll change mine up. Crewfighter, The "Undercover Security" in the Dempsey shirt, The lead singer for Rascal Flatts, and The Energizer Bunny for Ralston.
Would there be any room left after they put up Sigi? Also for Cultmore...no love for the Junk Shot? I mean he did have a posse and all.
I can remember the match when the guy on the PA tried to get the stadium to chant his name. Some people tried but everyone laughed.
1. Hunt (The Founder) 2. Hejduk (The Heart) 3. Oughton (The Soul) 4. The Polish Rifle (The Embodiment) Wouldn't Sigi be DQ for the same reasons Bake and Jeffro would be... I mean I understand his exit... but still
That's Mt. Dickhead. Different place entirely. As for Mt. Rushmore, without GBS this team doesn't win it's only championship. You simply can't leave him off. If Warzycha fields some winners, he'll belong too. Just as a player he has no more claim that Maissoneuve, McBride, Lapper or Clark.
I agree with this list. For those that are droping McBride due to his playing for Chicago. I would have to say that McHead always put in a full effort every time he put on the Crew uniform. My guess is that if he had not grown up in Chicago he would have chosen to come back to the Crew.
Just as I learned to say it, Ubu left. I actually saw him play for the USL P-40 team vs the Indiana Blast.... My wife, remembering old TV shows, used to say "Sit Ubu, Sit!" whenever he was announced. BTW, Mike Clark has to be on the big list for many reasons. He's the example Sigi and others gave of what it meant to be "true Crew" and the kind of player they wanted. He was the original "Hardest Working Man".
