Default Non soccer question

My friend and I are having an argument about the inventor of basketball's nationality. Dr. James Naismith was Canadian, wasn't he? My friend is saying that basketball was invented in Canada, but an American, but I think it's the other way around.

You're right. Naismith was Canadian and invented the game in the US. IIRC it was partially based on a game he played as a youth in Canada.

So what was it based on?

Team handball? I have no idea how long that game has been around, but it's the only game I can think of that's similar to basketball.
