I guess he got tired of the losing. Or the dog jokes. Or all those Geordies jangling their keys at him.

Hell with him: He had the Black Cats playing what looked like a soccer version of hockey's neutral-zone trap, and made it so boring it made the New Jersey Devils look like Arsenal. (Both of whom I root for, despite the disparity in styles.)

Keane might've been one of the best players ever, but he's still got a lot to prove if he wants to go on managing.

Let's not forget he brought the team to the Premier League so he does deserve credit, but it was time for a change in management wish him the best of luck and hopefully Sunderland get a good coach

WTF???? Can I have some of what you've been smoking? He spent a fortune getting them promoted. A chimp in an overcoat could have done it. Then he's spent more than David O'Leary spent to get Leeds into the Champions League on utter, utter shite that will barely keep them up. He has no concept of team spirit and balanced personalities, he has no concept of tactics and substitutions, he just signs lots of players and then can't coach them and has walked away as soon as things have got a bit difficult.

Keane DID do a good job at the time he took over and not any chimp in an overcoat could do which I think a Leeds fan should be able to understand considering you lot went from playoff finalists to relegation.

He inherited a team which had become the worst premiership team of all time for the 2nd time. The players were disilluisioned as were the fans, the club had lost 5 games in a row and the Club were rock bottom of the championship and the future looked bleak.

Keane in less than a season rebuilt a side with around 5 million pounds, not a kings ransom look at the money Birmingham spent that season and finished behind Sunderland despite having a settled preseason and start to the campain.

Keane then took a team he had quickly built to get out of one league and had to build another to stay in the premier league. He did not have the time other managers had due to his instant success, maybe this has been keanes own worst enemy. He did his job, Sunderland were the only promoted side to stay up that season, he may have wasted money but can you call it wasted money if it kept the club up?

This season he has attracted players to the club we could only dream of Cisse and Malbranque signed because of Roy Keane. Your statement that he knows nothing about team spirit is proof you dont know enough about Keanes time at Sunderland as he held regular team bonding sessions. However you are correct in that some of his tatics and selections were very questionable and he has walked out on the club which has given him everything to succeed. The fans were even chanting his name at 4-1 down to Bolton last weekend. Keane will never find the same adualtion and loyalty the Sunderland fans have shown him and he may regret leaving Sunderland maybe not now but in 5 years time.

You mean Peter Reid and his "monkey's heed"?

Maybe Keane's trying to build a relationship as a "fixer," somebody who can take a crummy team and make it respectable, like Billy Martin in baseball and Larry Brown in basketball. Of course, those guys also changed jobs -- a lot, though in Billy's case the reasons were not his own. And both were rather ordinary players in their sports, whereas Keane was a sensational player in his.

This does put Newcastle fans at a disadvantage: They're going to have to think up some new taunts, especially if the new manager doesn't have a name (or at least a last name's initial) that can match up well with "Oh what can it mean... "
