Seemed Michael heard our displeasure at his favored nickname: http://www.dispatch.com/live/conten...ce07.ART_ART_09-07-08_C3_KFB8ML3.html?sid=101
Arace has been writing about the Crew a LOT. Can anyone remember the last time that two Dispatch writers came to the stadium on a regular basis? He can call 'em canaries all he wants, as far as I'm concerned...it's the most consistent coverage I think we've ever seen.
And on the same day as an OSU game, yet. "In synchrony with the rise of his team, Schelotto has raised the level of his game to the point where it's mad to think he -- or, for that matter, anyone in the world -- can be any better. And still he outdoes himself. Last night, he was transcendent on an evening that rippled with anticipation. He leads the league with 18 assists, the third-highest season total in MLS history, and there are seven games to play. "Schelotto embodies a growing confidence that is now on display up and down the roster. There was such an air about them last night, even before they finally potted a goal. It was a type of healthy arrogance that we haven't seen in these parts since since when?" Arace is a "name" sportswriter in this town. This is the sort of thing that'll get people back in the stadium.
Read it on the porch with my morning coffee. A great start to the day, and thanks to Arace for giving the Crew a fair shot and his time and column inches. Massive Canaries is just fine with me.
Yes, I thought it impressive that we got more than half a page on a Sunday in the fall, but something in the other article caught my eye. I twas Sigi saying "I think we can work on winning the Supporter's Shield, or what ever it's called." Note that he didn't say just to win the Eastern Confrence. When we win silverware this year, I think the Dispatch need to step up their game on road games, and give wrap-ups on other MLS games.
I appreciate Arace's article but Canary does not work. Canary doesn't really inspire fear and fierceness. Too many canary in a coal mine references. Yellows would not be good either for the same reason. Yellow-coward. Why not just call them the Crew?
To win the Eastern Conference is to win the Supporters Shield. These canaries inspire fear, which is all that really matters. A nickname like that will go far for the exposure of the team in Columbus.
I love the article, but I reiterate I can't stand the canaries. Especially when your mascot is a cat. Then the mascot is the proverbial feline that ate the team?
I emailed him last week as many people have and i told him to use "Massive" and people will love it. Seems like he heeded the advice MASSIVE
The Sunday AM show on 1460. They seriously had a 10 minute conversation this morning about using "the" in front of highway names in California.
Ahhh. I haven't listen to 1460 (or any sports talk radio) in almost a decade. The lone exception being the postgame call-in shows on the drive home from the one or two Browns games a year I might go to....those are unintentional comedy at its finest. Back in 2004, when Flick, Fid, and I visited with Dunny during MLS Cup '04, we kept making fun of him for using "the" in front of highway names. Then Flick and I decided we were going to do it here, just to be dicks and to see if it would catch on. I don't think either of us made it a week before we stopped saying "the 315", "the 71", and "the 670." It was too annoying, even as a joke.
They do this in Buffalo too. I did hate the nickname "Canaries" Plus, doesn't some English team have that nickname. However, the Massive Canaries? I like.
