Default Abby Wambach: the road to recovery

With so much speculation regarding Abby's injury and rehab time I wanted to create a thread ( I don't want to clutter the news thread with one plaer's information) that could follow her rehab, her posibilities as to what she might do (besides PT) on the following months -some have talked about a role similar to Mitt's last year on t.v. or something of that sort.

What happens with all the tv commercials about the Olympics that she is on? Do they get re-shoot, or would they play them without her? what do you think?

Regardless of what she decides to do, I'm hoping for a speedy and complete recovery on a stronger player, both mentally and physically.

From the WPS website (quoting Rochester Democrat):

Abby Wambach is out of her hospital bed today in San Diego on crutches and expects to head to her home near Los Angeles tonight after having surgery yesterday on her broken left leg.

“It has been up and down with pain meds, but the doctors said things went perfect (in surgery) and I’m glad to have had the support of the people at the hospital and my team to get me to the point that I’m at right now,”

“This morning I got up on crutches and bent my knee, so things are already in motion, which is cool.”

“I was an important player for this team and the type of player that some people may say is irreplaceable, but the reality is I am replaceable. They have to replace me and they’re going to be confronted with a tougher challenge,” she said.

Was the fracture from the impact of the fall on the ground or being kicked by the Brazilian defender?

Abby plays a very reckless style. She's all over the field taking on defenders, midfielders and even opposing attackers. That's partially why we love her but it caught up to her. We hope for a speedy recovery!

Here's an article from the Rochester Democrat:

She says she won't be going to China because of the length of the flight.

She has handled this with so much dignity and class. I wish her a complete recovery.

Looks like the fracture happened when she collided with the Brazilian defender; by the time she hit the ground her leg was already broken.

If anyone was wondering if this injury would make Abby change her style of play:

"You can't think about 'what ifs' if you're going to play a game like soccer the way I (do)," said the three-time U.S. Soccer Female Athlete of the Year, whose 99 career goals rank fifth in American history.

"I'm all or nothing so whatever is in front of me (I go after). Now what's in front of me is rehabbing this leg and getting it back in shape so I can come back stronger, faster and fitter."

Good to see somethings remain the same.

It would be awesome to see Abby back on the field at the end of the year in one of the celebration games after winning gold. I'm sure the crowd would go wild and I would be amongst them

God I second that. Sometimes you get the best insight into a persons character when they are confronting adversity. I have to say I like Wambach that much more. Its sad about her not going to China, but then again she can join all us fans in our late night, viewing parties. Heres to lots of coffee, and waking the dog AND my neighbors everytime we score

Looks like Abby is going to stay in the LA area to do her rehab.

Wambach is expected to be on crutches for a couple of weeks, then start three months of intensive rehabilitation. She wants to be ready for next spring's relaunch of a women's professional league in America.

She said physical therapists at Athletes Performance in L.A. know she works out hard, but they won't let her over-extend.

"(They) know they'll have to put the brakes on me a few times," Wambach said.

Does this change the outcome of where she is going for the WPS?

Thanks Gayle!!!

...She made a point to call Lauren Cheney, her replacement on the Olympic roster, to make sure she was comfortable with how she made the team.

“I want you to go there and not feel bad about being selected in this type of way,” Wambach told Cheney. “It won’t do you any good or this team any good. Ultimately, it will not make the team perform better. What’s important is that the team going into this tournament is feeling that they can win this. At the end of the day, that’s what makes you stand at the top podium.”

....I’m jumping on her bandwagon and still looking for U.S. to compete for gold.

That makes two of us... GO USA!
