Default Well, this will cause no small bit of consternation

Saw this last night when I received my copy of SI in the mail:

Are You Like Me? (I bet you are.) I Bet You Hate Soccer
SI's most strident soccer basher tests whether five days of total immersion in the sport can transform a lifelong hater into a fútbol fanatic

This will:
1. Inspire several letters to SI's editor complaining that they wasted four pages in the magazine by devoting it to soccer of all things. SI will print at least a couple of these, as they enjoy doing any time they run soccer content. If soccer is on the cover, it's Katie Bar the Door and Why Didn't You Put My Team On the Cover and blah blah blah and soccer sucks and the same old crap;

2. Twist the knickers of several people here; and

3. Not change anything in the grand scheme of things.

Unlucky that the guy saw the HOU/DC rainout (how often does that happen? Man, we can't catch a break) and had an uninspiring experience at the bar. As we could have told him, it's not all World Cup quarterfinals and relegation escapes every day with this sport.

Um, it's a thread about an article in a major sports weekly regarding, among other things, MLS. That sorta sounds like, um, news to me. Jus' sayin'.

It actually isn't a bad piece, and considering the games the guy watched/attended, I'm glad to see that he experienced a slight change of heart.

It does have this "Daddy yelled at me so I don't like soccer" vibe.

Other than that, does he ever describe why he perosnally does not like soccer. Or does he just give general soccer-hating reasons?

I did (although reading my post it seems like I hadn't)

How much could he "hate" soccer if he is impressed after 15 minutes and a rain-out?

I agree with Sachin. If everyone converted so easily, we'd all (fill in joke)

Hell, I think it's a great piece, considering that the guy goes in saying he'd rather watch The Young and the Restless than a soccer game.

Quote:
After five days and six matches I can now say that I enjoy soccer at its best -- though I continue to despise it at its worst.
Hell, I'm a big soccer fan, and I feel the same way.

OK, maybe not despise, but I have, in the past 6 months, walked away from the pub thinking "Man, that was a waste of time."

To me, it's just more evidence that soccer is becoming just one more part of sports in the US.
