Those "awful" Metrostars finsihed above DC for 3 straight seasons before Pope was traded and DC was easily over those 3 years prior to the trade one of the worst teams in MLS.

Re: The five most under-performing players in MLS history
Eddie Pope? Revisionist history at its worst. In 2005 and 2006 he was clearly going downhill, but until then he was the best defender in the league.
Pando Ramirez is my vote for most underperforming player. Apart from his surprising cup-winning heroics, he was never a threat to score, always a threat to the hapless folks sitting in row Z behind the goal. Unlike Luis Hernandez and the other big-dollar acquisitions, this was a bust that I didn't expect from the beginning.
On the other hand, if you compare to the hype they had coming in... Lothar Matthaus, who found himself sitting on the bench before long. Denilson, ditto. Branco, back in '96 - his contribution to the Metrostars consisted mainly of red cards. Hong Myung-Bo - whose idea was it to bring in a player whose main strength was leadership and organizing the back line, and who didn't speak English?! Countless Central American internationals whose MLS careers lasted only a few games each. Also, does anyone remember Jerry Tamashiro in Miami's first season?
Oh yes. Naldo. The last I saw him, he was playing in the MISL and still looking incompetent against USL1 and USL2 caliber players. How exactly did this guy ever get signed by Galatasaray?

62 shots total
30 on goal
1 goal in the regular season -- off a penalty......
....which bounced off the post, off the keeper, and into the net.
You can't make this stuff up, folks.
