Celebrating the Golden Oldies: Dutch Football Icons (Who's your favourite?)
The title seems sufficient. Here are mine:
Bok de Korver
[Dutch football's first superstar]
Johannes Marius ("Bok") de Korver (born January 27, 1883 in Rotterdam – died October 22, 1957 in Rotterdam) was a football player from the Netherlands, who twice won a bronze medal with the Netherlands national football team at the Summer Olympics: in 1908 (London) and in 1912 (Stockholm).
De Korver played for Sparta Rotterdam between 1902 and 1923. He won the Dutch national title five times. De Korver scored his most notable goal in 1912, in a match again AFC Ajax. His goal won Sparta the national title.
De Korver played 31 caps for the Netherlands between 1905 and 1913, scoring one goal. He won two Olympic bronze medals, in 1908 and 1912. De Korver captained the latter team. He was also a player of the Dutch national team that beat England for the first time ever, in 1913.
Legend has it that De Korver never made a foul during his career. He thought training was unsportsmanlike to the opponent, and he loved to smoke cigars. De Korver was the first Dutch football player to be the subject of a biography, in 1916.
Bok de Korver was a civil servant for the municipality of Rotterdam. He ended his career at age 40, after pneumonia. De Korver died on October 22, 1957, aged 74. He was buried in Haren (Groningen).
De Korver was an honorary member of Sparta and of the Royal Netherlands Football Association. The football club BDK from Amsterdam was named after De Korver. The west stand of Sparta's stadium, Het Kasteel, was renamed Bok de Korver Stand on April 1, 2007.
Faas Wilkes
Servaas ("Faas") Wilkes ( October 13, 1923, Rotterdam — August 15, 2006, Rotterdam) was a Dutch football (soccer) striker, who earned a total number of 38 caps for the Netherlands national football team, in which he scored 35 goals (average 0,92). However, during a prolonged period of his career, between 1949 and 1956, he was considered not eligible for the Dutch National team as the then current rules did not allow for professional players.
Wilkes played with Xerxes Rotterdam, then arrived at Inter Milan in the summer of 1949. He played with Inter 95 matches scoring 47 goals. After the Inter period ended in the 1952 he played one season with Torino and at the age of 30 he moved to La Liga for Valencia, scoring with los Ches a total of 38 goals in 62 appearances between 1953-54 and 1955-56 making him the first foreign idol of the Valencian club. He also played for Levante and Hion. He died of a cardiac arrest, aged 82.
He is considered as one of the best football players the Netherlands ever had. Wilkes was the 4th Dutch player (after Gerrit Keizer, Bep Bakhuys and Gerrit Vreken) who played abroad.
The Dutch cartoon character Kick Wilstra was named in part after Faas Wilkes (Wilstra was also named after two other Dutch footballers, Kick Smit and Abe Lenstra).

What I didn't know was that Bok the Korver lies buried in Haren, some three miles from my home!

deafening silence.
well then, let's highlight one of the more contemporary classics:
The Hague's most affable sun
Aad Mansveld
Aad Mansveld (born 14 July 1944 [1], died 15 December 1991 [2]) was a Dutch football player who played a total of 559 games for ADO Den Haag. He also won six caps for the national side.

Re: Celebrating the Golden Oldies: Dutch Football Icons (Who's your favourite?)
Tonny van Leeuwen
...was a goalkeeper for GVAV (the precursor to FC Groningen) during the sixties and early seventies. He was bound for greatness but died in a carcrash in 1971. Although he was born in Gouda and started out his professional career at Sparta Rotterdam, he remains a local hero in Groningen to this very day.
In the Oosterpark Stadium a stand was named after Tonny van Leeuwen. [I used to sit, or rather stand, in the left corner on the second tier]

Re: Celebrating the Golden Oldies: Dutch Football Icons (Who's your favourite?)
No appointments until 4, so I'll continue my crusade to further general awareness of the DFIs - the Dutch Football Icons
And this certainly is a great Icon: Theo Laseroms. A merciless central defender - antitypically Dutch - but certainly one of the mainstays of the legendary Feyenoord 1970 squad. I was not alive back then, but my dad and my uncles were on the stands, each and every time. Stories about Laseroms' toughness are legendary; he was a crook and so was his partner in crime in central defence, Rinus Israel. Anyone familiar with the Leeds United squad of the seventies? Well, these guys were far worse...but they were a great team...and Laseroms was a great player

Matheus Wilhelmus Theodorus ("Theo") Laseroms ( March 8, 1940 – April 25, 1991) was a football defender from the Netherlands, who made name when he played for Feyenoord Rotterdam. Born in Roosendaal, he has six caps for the Netherlands.
Nicknamed Theo de Tank he was famous for his slidings. He played for Feyenoord in the 1960s and early 1970s, and was on the team that won the European Cup in 1970 by defeating Celtic in the final in Milan. Laseroms started his professional career at RBC Roosendaal in 1956, then moved on to NAC Breda in 1958. He came to Sparta Rotterdam in 1963, and played for a short period of time in the United States, at the Pittsburgh Phantoms.
Laseroms formed a solid defence at Feyenoord with Rinus Israel. He took off from Rotterdam in 1972, played for two more years in Belgium with AA Gent, before becoming a soccer coach. He coached Heracles Almelo, Helmond Sport, FC Vlaardingen, Trabzonspor and clubs from Bahrain and Saudi-Arabia. He died in 1991 in Zwolle due to a cardiac arrest.

Re: Celebrating the Golden Oldies: Dutch Football Icons (Who's your favourite?)
There can only be one Epi Drost! Nickname: Manolito - because he looked like a star from a western series in the early 1970s, can't remember what it was called now.
Joined Twente in 1966, retired in 1980. Won the Dutch cup with Twente in 1977. Played for the Dutch national team nine times in the early 1970s and was generally considered as one of the biggest talents of his generation - unfortunately he was deemed 'difficult'. In 1973, bondscoach Fadhronc (sp?) kicked him out of the Dutch national squad after an apparently big argument and he missed the 1974 world cup because of it.
Epi Drost today still is Twente's biggest cult hero, not just because he's one of the best players we've ever had but also because of his loyalty to the club and his style of play. This wasn't the Jaap Stam type of defender: elegant and with exceptional technical skills, Epi always sought the pretty solution and as a result was spectacular to watch.
