A new thread, to look at whats going on with the little teams from South East Asia.

Laos Under 23's to train in Vietnam

VIENTIANE (2 April 2008) – The national Under-23 team of Laos will be training with Vietnam club Hoang Anh Gia Lai as part of their preparation for the 25th SEA Games which Laos will be hosting in late 2009.

This development follows a recent agreement which was reached during the visit of Laos Deputy Prime Minister Somsavat Langsavad to the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai.

Under the agreement, all expenses for the training stint at Hoang Anh Gia Lai will be covered by the Vietnam club.

The club in return hopes to recruit Laos football talents for their Arsenal-Hoang Anh Gia Lai JMG football institute.

For the moment though, there are still no specifics as to when exactly the training programme will begin.

Indonesia Under 16's playing in Uruguay

JAKARTA (29 March, 2008) – The Indonesian Under-16 team fell to a 4-1 loss to Juventude in their second match of the Uruguay Under-17 League (Quinta Division) 2008.

The team which had gone to score a 1-0 over Rampla Juniors in their opening match of the league the previous week, just could not cope with the strong wind factor and conceded two goals in the opening quarter of the first hour.

And even though striker Syamsir Alam managed to a pull a goal back in the 16th minute, there was no stopping Juventude from picking up the full points when they scored two more goals after the break.

But credit should be given to the young Indonesian side where they failed not for the lack of trying but their inability to make good on the several clear chances.

“Generally, the players did well. But they have to be sharper with the chances that came their way,” added head coach Cesar Payovich.

They are associate members, so not full members, so they don't take part in ASEAN Cup, but i don't think they would really want to either.

They could have youth teams play in the youth clubs which would benefit them though.

    AFF U-16 Championship in July
KUALA LUMPUR: The ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) U-16 Youth Championship 2008 will be held in the Indonesian capital Jakarta from July 9-19, 2008, the Indonesian Football Federation announced recently.

Four teams from the ASEAN region and one from West Asia are taking part in the competition which has traditionally acted as a fine-tuning platform for the continental AFC U-16 Championship set to be held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from October 4-19, 2008.

Australia, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia will be joined by Bahrain in the competition.

The teams play a one-round robin before the top two teams meet in the final to decide the champions.

Big guns set for AFF U-19 Championship
BANGKOK: Australia, China, Korea Republic and hosts Thailand will be looking to gain invaluable match practice at the AFF U-19 Youth Championship from October 5-11 in the run-up to the AFC U-19 Championship 2008 to be held in Saudi Arabia later in the month.

The Football Association of Thailand recently announced the dates of the competition which kicks off with a match between Korea Republic and the hosts.

The teams engage in a one-round robin at the end of which the top two teams clash in the final.

The draw for the AFC U-19 Championship 2008 will take place on April 6 in the Saudi city of Dammam.

    AFC Challenge Cup

Philippines and Brunei will be set for a tight tussle in their AFC Challenge Cup matchup.

Both teams play in the ASEAN region and meet up on the 17th May, in what, hopefully will be a matchup that will determine who goes onto Indian hosted Challenge cup tournement.

Unfortuntly the draw hasen't been to kind to them and they will have to play Tajikistan who should be too strong for both teams. Bhutan are also part of the group.

Cambodia are set to play against Palestine, Macau and Nepal, but the host nation is unyet decided due to the poltical fiasco in Tibet that has reached over to Nepal (who were going to be hosts).

ASEAN's final representives are Laos who will have a tough task in playing Kyrgyzstan who nearly pulled a shock in the World Cup qualifiers over Jordan. Afghanistan and Bangladesh are also in the group. These games will be played in Kyrgyzstan.

VietNamNet Bridge – A US sports agency has invited the Vietnamese national football squad to participate in friendly matches in the US from June 7-10, 2008.

The team would play against the Guatemalan team and a club from the US or Mexico at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California. The US agency says it will cover all expenditures of the trip for 32 members of the Vietnamese national squad.

The national squad will play in the VFF Cup and some friendly matches from May 26 to June 5.

The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) is waiting for the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to announce its decision to the chief coach of the national squad, Henrique Calisto.

    Yes they do.

Singapore has a League Cup for Singapore teams and a Singapore Cup for foriegn entries - pity not all of ASEAN are represented - but this can tell us generally what level each team is at for the foriegn teams and Singapore based teams against foriegn opposition.

I'm not sure how serious these sides take it, but i'm, sure if your travelling abroad to play, i'm sure you want to win it, but i guess clashes with domestic fixtures could cause weakened teams.

Cup starts in May, and i believe the Thai Legaue will be in close season then, so should have full strength sides, but also opportunity to try out different formations / tactics.

It could be a good move for him, but I'd like to see him in Australia, he looked very sharp at the Asia Cup.

Bambang Pamungkas at Derby, i'd like to see that move, but if it happens Derby County will be in 2nd level of English football, so not sure if it will suit him.

But for Derby, £300,000 investment and i'm sure they'd make there money back.

Maybe it would be more wise for him to try his look in Australia, which i think conditions would suit him better and then maybe try his look if he adepts to the A-League in a years or 2 time.
