    Club:
    Arsenal FC
Has anyone seen/constructed an all-time international table, factoring in friendly and competitive results since that first England-Scotland game? It would be interesting to see the leaders in points and points per game

I hope someday people outside of Germany stop with the annoying habit of listing seperate records for Germany and "West Germany".

Thanks, sounds good. In 2007 I could usually be spotted in 114 in a blue Arsenal polo leading a cheer/making fun of the opposition goalie in the south net, but I got a long-sleeved TFC jersey (with "BMO" on the front), so I'll probably be wearing that!!

The funny thing is, if you say West Germany is something different than Germany, because Germany includes more land than West Germany, you'd also have to make seperate statistics for pre-ww2 Germany, since that included territory that's nowadays in Poland... for the same reason I want to see seperate statistics for pre- and postww2 Soviet Union and Poland and probably a whole lot of other states.

It also stayed the same country. West Germany has never been an official term - legally, the Federal Republic was formed in 1949 as the successor of the German Empire. In 1990 the GDR joint the FR, but no new state was formed (this theory, which has always been and still is the official position of the Federal Government, was questioned during the cold war, especially from East Germany and the USSR - however, since East Germany has officially joined the FR it's pretty much universally agreed on).

Neither the German FA, nor FIFA or UEFA seperate between German and West Germany, which indeed were represented by the same federation.

    From wikipedia.

In the aftermath of World War II, the FIFA decided in November 1945 to ban the DFB (and Japan) from international competition. This was only changed in 1949 when the English Football Association requested FIFA to lift the ban on games. FIFA did so on 7 May 1949, two weeks before the Federal Republic of Germany was founded, requiring permission by the military governments of the time. Due to partition into three states, the DFB was legally re-founded in Stuttgart on 21 January 1950 by only the West German regional associations (without Saarland). The Swiss Football Association requested full DFB membership at the FIFA congress on 22 June which was granted on 22 September 1950 in Bruxelles.

In the early years of the division of Germany, West Germany claimed exclusive mandate of all of Germany. Unlike the IOC, which hesitated until 1965, the FIFA soon recognized the East German Football Association. Upon reunification in 1990, the Deutscher Fußball Verband der DDR (DFV) was absorbed into the DFB .

Why don't they actually devide Italy's record? Before 1945 it was the Kingdom of Italy if I remember correctly and after 1945 it became the Republic of Italy - two different legal forms of states. Yet their record in this table it seems is not divided.

probably because they don't change the current federation.

there's no relationship with the county, and with the federation,

I dont agree either with spliting west germany and germany. East Germany obviously has to be put apart because it was under the soviet regime. But WEst Germany is still the same Germany that is today and since the country has merged in to the same west germany regime i dont see why german and west germany should be divided.

Not trying to ruin your fun since this has been the most active thread in this forum for a while (I was feeling real lonely)

But I think the main reason for the names is basicaly a database development issue. When you enter the data in a DB you list it as the teams name at the time. So you get West Germany and Germany and the final standings are tabulated based on that data.

More current issues that always come up are NY/NJ Metrostars and New York Red Bulls as well as MK Dons and Wimbledon.

Although if I was producing an official document or publication that I'm sometime hired to do I would make sure to make a footnote explaining the political or organizational changes

It's actually a pretty common misconception - on the English Wikipedia seperate articles are created, merged and deleted again for years now :D. It's just one of the topic I like to comment on whenever I see it, so I didn't want to criticize the specific database. A long time ago there was a discussion on BigSoccer when someone claimed that Germany never won the World Cup, since then I made this some kind of cause, sorry ;).

It's not about the forms of state - just that different names are used in English, while in German such a distinction isn't made. So it's not really a big issue - if the wikipedia discussions I mentioned above (just reread them out of curiosity after posting) are an indication, some Germans on the other hand seem to think it's some kind of conspiracy to keep Germany down or something, which is kinda over the top as well ;).

No problem as a Statistician I try to remain conspiracy free.

I can understand your views and can kind of relate with it I'm Irish originaly myself but am from the Republic yet I like to regard George Best as one of our own (an Irishman) and have had arguement with English who like to take credit of him for themselves.

I guess my question would be as an outsider if you were an East German during the time Germany won the World Cups would you still claim them as your own or can only people living in West Germany at the time properly claim them.

Also as a second question how are the top East German players such as Streich (98 caps/53 goals), Vogel (69 caps/24 goals) Dorner (96 Caps), Croy (86 caps) regarded historicaly in German soccer.

To the second question: in the statistics published by the DFB, you'll find East German players right next to West Germans, and for players who played in both nts the sum is given (eg Ulf Kirsten 100 caps (49 DFV, 51 DFB)), with a note if the caps/goals were made for the GDR nt (see eg http://www.dfb.de/index.php?id=5000...ga=Nationalmannschaft&lang=D&cHash=2391784223), media adapts that sometimes, but sometimes the east Germans are omitted in such lists. The west Germans will usually not include east Germans when talking about their best players on their own, but I'd say a lot of people with football knowledge would agree that Streich was among the best German footballers once you remind them of him, the east Germans will always name some east Germans. Media features about legendary players often include Streich and sometimes Sparwasser or other east Germans. To summarize: they are recognized by parts of the population and most publications.

The first question is more difficult, I'd say it depends a bit on when the east German grew up... I'd say old GDR Oberliga fans who still remember their own nt will probably not connect to the west German nts and if you ask them how often they were world champions they'll say "never", but for people who grew up in the unified Germany, I'd guess most would say "3 times". Would be an interesting research, though ^^

Of course not everyone in East Germany was fond of the East German national team. Especially concerning the 1954 title, it's usually said by sport historians that, unlike the (government controlled) media, most East Germans (either secretly or more openly) celebrated the victory as their own. It's known that not only people celebrated on the streets in many East German cities, but also that in one East German prison, where the inmates where allowed to watch the final on TV, after the game was over, suddenly everyone started to sing the German (at that time only West German, though) national anthem.

Thanks for the clear up and information.

I'm actualy to young to even remember most of the time with Germany being split and just started watching football during the 1990 World Cup. Although since following the game I do remember Kirsten as being a good player.

I think its unfortunate about the Cold War is that in almost all sports players playing in the communist based countries almost remain unknown in terms of historical data. Even when doing my current work I still have problems doing work for some of those leagues example the Russian Premier League just because the information is not availible in an easy to get format.

It is amazing the German's success in that period of time. I grew up in Toronto Canada so there is every race of people but not a large german population so through friends I learned a lot about the British, French, Italian, Spanish and Portugese football but lacked the knowledge on German soccer outside finding a couple of copies of Kicker Magazine.

It would be interesting to multiply the points of each NT for the average points of their opponents. E.g. South Korea has more points than Italy, but they were gained against weaker teams. This should be reiterated until a static situation is obtained.

It's not difficult: the data about the opponents of each NT are e.g. on eloratings.net (down in this moment). But doing this by hand would take too much time: a simple script should do the work.
