Norwich 4-0 Grimsby

McVeigh 41, 70
Nationwide Division One
Norwich bounced back from their play-off heartbreak to hit the ground running with an opening-day cruise against Grimsby.
Nigel Worthington's men struck twice in each half to join Rotherham at the top of the table, and shake off the disappointment of last May when Birmingham pipped them to the Premiership in a penalty shoot-out.
Phil Mulryne and Paul McVeigh were the men who sank the Mariners with two goals apiece, both scoring once in each half.
Grimsby keeper Danny Coyne had already denied Iwan Roberts when Norwich's bright start brought dividends as Clinto Easton teed up Mulryne for a crisp low drive that zipped into the bottom corner.
Former Watford man Easton found another gap in the Grimsby defence as McVeigh made it two within 12 minutes, finishing sweetly after Roberts had headed a deep cross into his path.
The visitors did threaten with a Steve Livingstone header at the start of the second half, but Mulryne completed his brace as he lifted Mark Rivers through ball over the advancing Coyne.
The goal that took the Canaries into second in the fledgling table came 10 minutes from time as Mcveigh again profited from Roberts clever link play, latching onto the Welshman's through ball and slotting home.
