How could I forget about Merlo??? I was at the game when River played at Racing for the first game that Gallardo faced his old coach.

Well we don't need no primadonna's. That was one aspect of Veron that was super attractive.

Re: Offseason Near News and Rumors Thread Three - Bier and Sausages Edition
While it may even be possible to keep Gomez and another high salary player, I will resubmit the question that would we want to keep both if the supposed player was a central midfielder?
I think it's more important to get an established threat on the wing, and I'd be willing to part with either of the central players if it meant we could do that.
However, the only line of thought I can see as *maybe* working out with both players, would be to play Gomez as a forward or withdrawn striker, competing for minutes with Emillio, Moreno, and Niell.

**********TOTAL SPECULATION WARNING**************
Look, in the offseason we dumped the notable salaries of Vanney (216K), B. Carroll (115K), Gros (72.5K) and Perkins (85K)...
Based on last year's cap numbers ( http://www.mlsplayers.org/files/8_31..._info_club.pdf), you're looking at the following hits to the cap...
Gallardo - 400K
Gomez - 350K? (from 216K)
Luciano - 265K
Fred - 190K
Moreno - 175K? (that'd be down from 250)
Olsen - 155
Gonzalo Martinez - 175K (total guess)
Niell, Gonzalo, and Carvallo, together I'd guess at 300K, based on Facundo's 115 and the fact that nobody in MLS is paying a goalie who may not start more than 75K.
Other notable salaries...Namoff at 85K, Zach Wells at 50K, and Simms at 52.5K
Everyone else is basically on developmental salaries; Burch, Kpene, McTavish at 30K, J. Carroll, DeRoux, Mupier at 13K, Dyachenko at 18K.
That's 20 or 28 possible players, throw in a few exempt players...
You're at 2.34 million right there. What's the new cap figure? I don't know, get some good bargaining by DCU to get the new signings in a little below those numbers, and you COULD pull them both in under the cap with not much difference in the salary makeup of the team.
For comparison sake, Cooke's cap number in Colorado last year was 147K.

1. You've got to assume all veterans get salary increases. It's in the CBA.
2. I think $300k for our S.A. addtions (minus Gallardo) is wildly unrealistic. Carvallo is being brought in to compete with Wells. I wouldn't be surprised if he made as much as $100k and probably no lower than $60-70k. Martinez is a veteran of 3 Italian teams. I figure he's probably making somewhere between $175k-$250k--he is a Colombian NT player, is well known by people who follow SA futbol outside of Argentina and Brazil. Niell--it's anyone's guess.
3. I thought Kasper said at the end of the season that Emilio would be getting a big salary increase for 2008.
Look, I love Gomez. But we (on an MLS budget and cap) can't afford Gomez and Gallardo. It would be like San Jose trading for Joe Cannon and then signing Kasey Keller. And even if we did have the cap money available, I'd argue it would make more sense to spend it on other positions (Peralta at CB, a strong outside mid, another goal scorer).
And for those who point to all our allocation money, my understanding is that we can't spend more than $500k to buy down cap hits in one year.

If there's one thing the Argentine authorities can't stand - it's unregistered blimps!
Sorry, just had to have some fun with your typo...

I put in Gonzalo Martinez at 175, it's the other Gonzalo (Peralta - a 2nd Division Argentine player) that I grouped in the 3 for 300K.
I cannot believe Carvallo would be paid 6 figures. In MLS if you pay a goalie that much he's an automatic starter. With the cap, there's no way DC gets rid of one of the top young keepers in the league only to bring in 2 players to compete for a starting role at a combined salary almost double that of Perkins. That's an RSL move.
Niell, same basic situation as Gonzalo Peralta...2nd division player, or part-time first division player.

I was under the impression, based on comments by Goff, that the reasons for Emilio's wanderlust in the offseason was his expectation that he'd be rewarded right away for his good year...but that DCU felt a contract was a contract. I don't know what type of increase would be in it, but it coulden't be that much or 1) Emilio woud be happier, and 2) he'd be getting close to DP territory.
I don't think that we will have both (heck, we may have neither) but if you have Emilio, Niell, Moreno, Fred, Gomez, and Gallardo (and Benny ghosting in at the back post) I think you're okay on goal scorers. And you have Kpene and Dyachenko as non-goal scorers.
Wide mid...eh, did okay last year and Burch should be a better presence up the wing this year. Nothing wrong with being a team that plays through the middle if you have the talent for it. Or the obvious solution to me is to find someone that can fill the role but is salary cap exempt.
Peralta at CB...I wouldn't hand him a starting job over McTavish just yet. Back to the earlier point, the guy has established himself as a 2nd Division player, and DC has a good track record with bringing in foreign talent but Payne is still no better than 50/50 in that regard.
