It's worth remembering that earlier playoff formats resulted in considerably more playoff games. And as many as 80% of teams made the playoffs some years. So teams, and players, who were playoff regulars in those years amassed a lot of stats in a relatively short time span.
It looks like an error was made with Chivas. They lost one game and drew the second ... not won one and lost one.

Here's an interesting way of looking at the table: Team - Series Wins - Total Wins LA - 7 - 26 NE - 7 - 12 DC - 6 -23 Chi - 6 - 19 KC - 5 - 12 SJ/Hou - 4 - 14 Clb - 4 - 11 Col - 4 - 7 Dal - 2 - 9 NY - 1 - 6 Mia - 1 - 3 TB - 1 - 2 Chv - 0 - 1 New England is reallly efficient, winning as many series as LA in less than half the total wins, while Dallas has 2 more wins than Colorado, but 2 less series wins. (This is a bit skewed because of the changing playoff formats, so to win some series takes more wins than others)
Yeah but I only had his data to go off of so I didn't know which wins were credited to SJ and which ones were credited to Houston.

Statistically analyzing the league, it makes more sense to follow the franchise. San Jose can keep their stars and trophies, but an honest statistical appraisal of the history of coherent teams is better done without regards to league marketing initiatives.
For marketing reasons, sure. But if you want to analyze how teams have done over the history of the league, they are one and the same.
Actually they're not. The "franchise" actually stayed in SJ as well. For statistical purposes Houston only has a 3 year franchise history to work with statistically as well. It may not be convenient or pretty but anything 2005 and before is statistically part of San Jose's playoff records and will remain so.
Like I said. For marketing reasons, sure. If you're trying to statistically analyze the history of given franchises or teams, then the original ClashQuakes and Dynamo are one team and the current Quakes are a second. Keep your "record books" as you will. That's cool.
So what you're saying is for statistical purposes, even though the Dynamo didn't exist before 2006 you should still use old numbers to statistically analyze them? Doesn't track for me. They didn't exist prior to 2006 so there is nothing to statistically analyze.
If you're trending the way teams and players stats change over time than the 96-05 ClashQuakes and 06-08 Dynamo are statistically one cohesive entity. For marketing purposes, it does nothing to crow about trophies won in San Jose to the Houston market. There are valid reasons to look at things both ways.
