It's a shame more teams don't use the ol' 3-6-4 formation. I bet they'd win a lot more games if they did.:p

I'd be interested to know how their voting works. As noted, there are more first team selections because of ties. However, I would think they would re-vote with the players that tied. That's how it was done when I coached HS for our "All-whatever" teams. But I do like the 3-6-4... I guess now we know why the BigTen is so strong!

Also, I do find it interesting that Sarkodie wasn't a unanimous selection. I've been nothing but impressed with Ofori and I think he's got a tremendous future. What BigTen coach doesn't think he's one of the top 3?

Second straight POY for Furman defender Jon Leathers. Very rare to see defenders win a conference POY once, much less twice. I'll be interested to see how MLS teams rate Leathers, a small (I believe) central defender who has shown little offensive interest or ability (first goal of his career came last weekend).

Also interesting that Brooks Duff, who was getting a lot of pub early in the year for his offensive exploits, did not win Freshman of the Year - beaten out by Canadian teammate Haris Cekic.

Anyone think it's strange that the Defensive Player of the Year didn't make first team or that only one defender made first team?

I'm quite baffled by that as well. Phelan is actually playing in the midfield now for Wake but you would think that a defender from the team that's leading the nation is goals against would win the award. Surprised to not see Julian Valentin on either list as well as the fact that only one defender made 1st team. To me though these all-conference teams are just as subjective as national rankings...

Honestly, I don't put as much into all-conference selections for soccer as I do other sports. With soccer, players aren't always locked into one position so that can mess up the entire "team" or best eleven aspect of the all-conference selections. First and foremost, I want the deserving people on the lists and not just the bigger names. I don't care as much which team as long as they make one of the teams.

I'm the most vocal advocate for these awards, because I think they are the best way to evaluate players other than by doing serious individual scouting. I think there is a "Wisdom of the Crowds" thing that happens and the collective vote of coaches is more accurate than probably any one coach would be.

That said, the ACC always has the most idiosyncratic all-conference list. The only thing I can think of is that this year the coaches were told to just vote for their 11 favorite players, regardless of position. And Gonzalez did not have enough votes to make that list, but still had more DPOY votes than Phelan.

How does Corbin Waller get first team GK over Bryan Amos? Not sure I understand that.

Which brings us back to, why wasn't the defender of the year on first team?;) Wasn't the greatest season of defense under Coach Weiss for Tech, but I guess offense really was better than defense this year in the ACC.:p
