Post United on Tour-Summer of 1908

During the summer of 1908 Manchester united with the manager Ernest Magnall went on a tour of the Austro-Hungarian empire. The team had wrapped the 1907/08 championship with 52 points, 11 points in front of Aston Villa and Manchester City, having won 23, drawn 6 and lost 9. The team arrived in Vienna to play an combined Vienna team who they beat 4-0 then the team arrived in Budapest by Train. Here they were to play two games against Ferencvaros. The first they won 6-2 but the second game was beset by problems. The crowd did not take lightly to the demolition (7-0) that United gave them and started to throw stones and were becoming extremely unruly. The police quelled the unruly crowd by drawing their sabres and scoring an equally-clear cut victory.
United made the error of riding back to their hotel in an open-topped bus, providing more opportunites for the Ferencvaros fans to throw their stones and spit at the united contingent. Hungarian officials apologised for the disturbance and although Magnall promised that United would return the next summer, they did not.

When the United team returned the first Charity Sheld was contested at Stamford Bridge between Manchester United and QPR. The first leg ended in a 1-1 draw but the second leg was won 4-0 by United in front of a 40,000 crowd and Turnball getting a hat-trick.

*In the 1908-09 season United beat Bristol city 1-0 in the FA Cup final, with 70,000 at Crystal Palace, as Turnball scored the only goal (he died in the battle of Arras in 1917).

Here is a link to a more detailed account of how united got to the final

**On a very interesting point there is a Whiteside in the 1907-08 squad but he only made one appearance that season.(Just think of Norman Whiteside with his book out)
