I found an interesting article here.

French beer.(brewing industry in France)(Industry Overview)

http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1G1-54773134.html

A quote there says:

"Wine may be king in France, but beer is just as much, if not more, the everyday alcoholic drink of the French. As explained by Alain Levy, a Frenchman, professional chef and Associate Professor at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park NY, "Not everyone can afford good wine, so rather than drink a cheap or bad wine, people wait and save their money for that special bottle. In the meantime, they drink beer."

Ok if this is indeed true then why wasnt France ranked on that list ??

the anti-french attitudes persist.

actually, i'm not that surprised. french people aren't binge drinkers like americans or the anglos. they have one beer and then they're done for the day. when i go to nevada smiths for international matches you'll see the english and irish hanging out way after the match is over just getting wasted. the french fans come in, MAYBE order a beer, watch the game and then leave.

first, remember this list is per capita, so the size of the nation is not relevant.

as far as just how much the french drink, a quick google gives you every point of view and its opposite; not only about how much beer we drink, but also whether we're drinking more or less. the same for the match wine v. beer or for alcohol consumption in general. basically health organisations seem to overestimate (to try to convince people to drink less) and brewers and vintners underestimate (to convince us to drink more?)

in any case, the french aren't really big drinkers in the way of the english or east europeans.

these two stories are informative. in the paper edition i remember even more info about france being the exception in growing teenage drinking in europe.

No surprise. There's only two places in France where people know how to drink beer: Nord and Alsace.

faux et archifaux!

you might have said these are the only places that know how to make beer, but most big cities have microbreweries these days, not as much as in the states but they exist and do a good job.

as for knowing how to drink beer, there's a place in lyon called le palais de la bière... i'm not talking about another theme pub: the waiter comes over and asks questions about what kind of beer you like, proposes some tasting, talks about beer just like a sommelier would about wine... in an irish pub you come out a couple of hours later a bit dumber, here you come out a lot smarter!
