Default Honoring Cobi

Goff reported: "DCU will honor the retiring Cobi Jones in a brief pregame ceremony Thursday."

There seems to be a lot of controversy about this upcoming act. Some fans say they will clap, others will boo. I can understand honoring Eddie Pope in RFK, but Cobi hasn't exactly been a fan favorite. Seems that the organizers of this "honor" are just asking for a negative fan reaction. Thoughts?

I'm hoping it's close to start so we're in to honor him with few hundred middle fingers

Or a few hundred tossed AA batteries at the little "Chompers"...

--The guy is easily one of the biggest tools in MLS (oh the irony...)

Sure he has been a "great" player for the US National team, but frankly the only thing I ever enjoyed was watching the Mexicans beat the leiving hell out of him. It's probably the only time I ever liked the Mexican team

If I were sitting in the upper deck, I might be tempted to honor Cobi by throwing some 12-year-old kid in a #23 Galaxy shirt onto the field, but since I won't be, I'll settle for booing.

Perhaps we should honor Cobi with a banner:

"DC United Fans Celebrate the Retirement of Cobi Jones: Putting the Gal in the Galaxy for 11 years."

I think it's a pretty nice gesture, honoring one of the guys who, whether we have liked him or not, has done quite a bit to help make MLS what it is. Honoring the charter members is a very classy thing to do.

I myself have never been a huge Cobi fan -- I hate his hair, for the most part. But he has been good for the Galaxy, he's accepted his changing role with grace and aplomb. And he has actually made a big contribution to them even in these last few years -- he has done well against us, for instance. Plus I can appreciate the things he did for the national team.

All in all, I give kudos to Kevin Payne (I assume he is one of the driving forces behind this) for this gesture. Folks here will joke (or may even be serious), but as a big fan of Major League Soccer, I appreciate moves like this.
