Default Dial-Up Accelerators

I've seen some ads (one was here on BS, I believe)for services that claim to increase the speed of a dial-up connection. Does anybody have any experience with these? Do they work?

Hey, thanks for answering my question. That was really helpful.
To answer yours, DSL isn't available in my area and the cable company I had was completely unreliable. I don't like paying $50 a month for something that isn't going to be there all the time.
