Petition to Change name of Chivas USA
Thread Originally posted by Warlocklord
I have started a petition to change the name of Chivas USA, as we are seeing an evolution in the existence of the team. Numerous fans have made the mention that they do not feel a connection to the name Chivas USA and as such, we are starting a movement to get the owners and FO to realize this.
It is time that we see a change in the name so that we can create a new image and connection. The following is part of the petition:
Quote:
At this point in time, Chivas USA has become a team representative of Los Angeles, as is evidenced by the diverse roster and fans in attendance. Yet, the current name does not represent this, and as a result, lacks in a connection to the surrounding community. Most successful international teams are named after their base city, not the country they are in. This is exemplified by Manchester United, Real Madrid, and FC Barcelona to name a few.
Thus, we are calling upon the owners and the front office of Chivas USA to realize that the team has evolved and that a more regional name involving the use of Los Angeles would be more advantageous to them for marketing, as well as to the local fans to put their arms around. We suggest the use of: CD Chivas LA, CD Los Angeles or Los Angeles FC, so as to embrace the true nature and existence of the team.

So if you agree and want to see something done, sign the petition so that we can have our voice heard. And remember to spread the word to all of your friends so that we can amass a collection of signatures in an effort to see change.

Re: Petition to Change name of Chivas USA
If the roster and fans are diverse, how is that not representative of the USA, not just just LA?

Not representing the city/state/region you are playing in -> thumbs down.
Chivas "USA" is almost as bad as "Real" Salt Lake.
Chivas de Los Angeles (LA Chivas in english) or CD Los Angeles (Chivas) is what I'd go for.

The team is in the US, is it not? I don't see how they're representing the US. Though, if they changed their name, I wouldn't be bothered by it. I'm not a fan.

Re: Petition to Change name of Chivas USA
I think it will happen at some point. It took about two or three years for the MetroStars to drop the "NY/NJ" from their name. I think the same will happen at some point with Chivas USA. Hopefully it will be for Club Deportivo Los Angeles with Chivas remaining as the official nickname, which sounds good and still nods to the regular Chivas and Latino fans....

Re: Petition to Change name of Chivas USA
Maybe i'm the only one, but i was hoping for Los Angeles Aztecs when i first heard about a 2nd LA team.
BUT i do like the idea of renaming to CD Los Angeles because i hate little brother teams.

The name is fine. When they start their championship dynasty they'll become America's Team .

Re: Petition to Change name of Chivas USA
As long as Jorge Vergara owns the club, the word Chivas will be in the title. Therefore you might as well forget about anything aside from CD Chivas LA.
Personally I still think the move to throw a second team in LA was a dumb one and still is. Take a look at the Real Salt Lake support and that's exactly why. Chivas may be a better team now, but they still get LOUSY support considering. With the team Chivas is, there should be 27k in there.
Meanwhile, the Galaxy are drowning out anything Chivas does with just two words: David Beckham. Did anybody seriously think Chivas was going to be able to draw in THAT many more fans just because of the name? Ship the team to San Diego or Phoenix.

Re: Petition to Change name of Chivas USA
It's "Chivas USA" because they want to be the team for all Mexican Americans throughout the country. And if anyone thinks that Mexican Americans only live in the Southwest, let me tell you that thousands of Chivas fans show up at Giants Stadium every time RBNY plays them.
And I talked soccer with the children of Mexican migrant workers hundreds of miles north of NYC who were all Chivas USA fans.
