just looking for a clarification on offsides. can you break the plane when the ball is kicked, or when the ball breaks the plane? it never seems to be consistent. what is the hard and fast rule?

It's the player's position when the ball is played that determines whether he (or she) is offside. If the offensive player without the ball is even with or behind the last defender (not counting keeper), then he or she is not offside.

You are correct that this is probably the most inconsistent call in soccer.

I assume the plane is the invisable wall the torso is considered as breaking when looking across the FOP in line with the 2nd last defender or the ball? The rule is very hard and very consistant. As JohnW correctly points out the attacker's body position (torso) at the time the ball is kicked in relation to the second last defender or the ball if even with or the defenders are closer to their own goalline than no offside position is present. I recommend of thinking of the keeper as another player in terms of offside.

If there are discrepencies it probably is a combination of a lack of experiance or the eye not being able to accurately track the rapid motion of players going in opposite directions when the ball is leaving the foot of the teammate. It is easy to say freeze frame the field at that moment of impact very, very hard to do. unless you are the slow motion camera dedicated to that specific idea.;o

Offside Position is determined at the moment the ball is kicked or last touched by the teammate. The flight of the ball and subsequent movements of players changes nothing. A player can be miles behind the 2nd last defender when he recieves the ball and not have been offside when it was kicked. Just as a player who was in an offside position can return to his side of the field and still be declared offside if he plays the ball.

I train players in offside deception that is legally allowed under the laws. Offside positioned players who the defenders are eager to trap. We have those player(s) ignore the ball through and place a runner coming late from an on sided position. The key is having the AR or CR recognize the body language of the NON involvement by turning away. Especially great on free kicks over the top.

just want to make sure what you are saying. you have players in the offsides position, not involved in play as decoys, and then have runners come into play from onsides?


and, could you sum it up by saying it is from when the ball is kicked, or is that too simplistic?

offside players are decoys but need to be trained on not looking involved even when the ball is quite close, onside runners take advantage of defenders with raised hands standing about.

When the ball is kicked or touched by the teammate. Freeze frame, that determines the offside position. Now we look for involvement immediatly or at a later time until offside resets
