Staying power: Twellman scores new deal By Frank Dell'Apa, Globe Staff | February 12, 2007 "Taylor Twellman has signed a contract that will place him among the highest-paid players in Major League Soccer. When Twellman makes his first appearance at preseason training today, the Revolution are expected to announce the signing of their all-time leading scorer to a four-year contract worth about $300,000 per year..." http://www.boston.com/sports/articles/2007/02/12/staying_power_twellman_scores_new_deal/
Real news! Serious money spent on a player! Am I in New England? Pinched myself, appear to be awake...
Finally, a sign that the Krafts are willing to invest some big money in a long term deal. A very good sign. let's hope it continues with a certain midfielder....
great stuff, 300k is a fair price for Taylor. Thats one less thing on his mind and one less possible disgruntled player on the roster
Yeah, someone pinch us all I guess. But seriously, I'm glad to see Taylor staying with the Revs'. He didn't enjoy one of his best season last year, but that wasn't really his fault. One can just as easily blame Steve Nicol for changing the 3-5-2 system to 3-4-3 which gave Twellman less support in front of the goal. Glad to see one of our key players staying with the club, as I'm happy for the man. He deserved a higher wage for sure. Harald Natvik
An article of note, if but for the local connection: Galaxy gives two a magical ride French forward Merlin and Portuguese midfielder Fortes are selected from 800 hopefuls for one-week trial with the team. Question: What is the maximum player salary now in MLS? This is a great contract - the irony being that the MLS' arcane rule system sort of penalizes you for these kind of above-the-board contracts. Keep in mine: Becks will only count for about 450K against his team's cap as will Reyna. And if LA or NY sign another DP - even if they pay him millions - only 350K of that player's salary will count against that cap. Then you have Johnson, Wolfe, and Donovan who only count for about the same as Twellman "on the books", although they actually make skads more.
To provide a measure of contrast and context to the Twellman news, here's an article some of you may have missed: US-Mexico matchup special for Revs midfielders By Frank Dell’Apa, Globe Staff | February 7, 2007 http://www.boston.com/sports/soccer..._mexico_matchup_special_for_revs_midfielders/ The Magpie
1) The article stated $300,000 for a non DP. 2) The first DP costs 400K against the cap, not 450K. 3) The second DP costs 325K against the cap, not 350K 4) Wolff is gone. And for this year they are grandfathered in but the teams will be required to use a DP spot on them after this season.
I'm glad no European team scooped up Taylor. After watching a week-end of EPL and Serie A, I thought how well Twellman would do in those venues with the quality of crosses and his brave & unselfish attacks at goal. His mind should be clear and hopefully his body healed. He can now just get out there and show us what we all know he's capable of, for both team and country. Congrats Taylor..
I wonder if this is a start for Kraft soccer to start paying more attention (and money) towards the Revs. Knowing Kraft's history with players complaining about their contracts (although it wasn't anywhere near what Twellman was asking for), it's surprising to see that Twellman came out victorious and is in NE for another 4 years.
Glad to see some more good news come out of Foxboro. Congrats to Taylor. He deserves it, and personally, I'm also glad he didn't get the DP spot as some had suggested.
This is not only great for the Revs and Taylor but for MLS as well. I didn't think Taylor was a huge threat to leave for richer waters (i.e. Europe) but he could've scored a contract overseas greater than what he has now. So this signing saves not only one of the top flight forwards in MLS from fleeing the league, but one of the top flight Americans from fleeing the league. And we have to face the fact that is certainly a problem that affects MLS. So this is great for the Revs and I have to second Monty it was nice to hear some news out of Foxboro.
