Default Pub pool in Newcastle

Being a tad drunk on christmas eve, something that has bugged me for a while now bubbles up to the surface.

So I have, perhaps, a stupid question.

I used to live in newcastle and I learned to play pool there and I'm wondering whether Newcastle is the only place in the UK where you stay on the table until you are beaten?

Everywhere else I've been to, you time is up when your money has gone, in a very miserable way.

The way geordies play pool seems much more fun, what's with this strange north-eastern custom?

In some of the bars I go to (in California), the pool tables are coin-operated varying from 50 cents to $1 and you pretty much stay at the table until you are beaten. You'll have challengers lay down their coins on the table, wait their turn and they pay to play you. For example, this one chick I was hanging with: we both played, she beat me but others wanted to play her so they paid and she was kicking all of their asses so she stayed at the table until someone beat her, which eventually happened after about an hour.
