Re: Lamar Hunt, 1934-2006 Oh, goodness... I'm really choked up right now. This is terrible news. I feel so bad for his family. What a hero Lamar Hunt was for the soccer community in America. There will never be another like him. Sigh. This is so sad.
Re: Lamar Hunt, 1934-2006 I owe a lot of the best memories of my life to this guy. As a kid, I loved going to NASL games and I look back on going to them with such fondness. Without Lamar Hunt's commitment to the NASL, that doesn't happen. In college, Sunday afternoons in the fall were a time to relax with your boys, drink beer, eat pizza, BS and watch the NFL. Then over winterbreak I'd always get together with all my HS friends to share laughs and watch the NFL. I don't remember much about the games themselves - save for a couple or Redskins key wins - but the socializing is some of the best times I look back on from that era. Lamar Hunt helped make the NFL not just a league but a part of a social gathering. As an adult, going to MLS games and having the sport to follow has brought me great joy. I had to fightback tears going to United's season-opener - with a bunch of friends - in 96. That doesn't happen without Lamar Hunt. Never met the guy and he damn sure never heard of me. But without meaning to and without me realzing it till tonight, he had a huge influence over how I spent large chunks of my free time most of my life. Thanks for letting me have those memories, Mr. Hunt. Godspeed and thoughts and prayers to your family.
Rest in Peace, Mr. Hunt, and thank you for everything you did for all of us... My prayers are with you and your family.
While he will be remembered in the mainstream for his work within American Football, us soccer fans will remember him as one of the most important non-players in US Soccer. My thoughts are with the Hunt family.
Oh no....this is a sad day. RIP Mr. Hunt and thank you for all that you've done for the sport of soccer.
The Lord has taking you home rest in peace and Thank you for everything you have done for soccer we will never forget.
One other thing - I'm gonna use Lamar's death as a chance to get on a soapbox. Mr. Hunt died of prostate cancer. In most cases, this is a preventable disease. Guys, get yourself checked, starting in your mid 30's. Ladies, make sure the men in your life get checked starting in their mid-30's. Get checked annually. My father had this but, mercifully, it was caught early and he's been cancer free 10 years this month. It's a genetically linked disease, so odds are I'm gonna have to deal with it sometime, so you can see why I'm so serious about this. It's also one of the most common, but most treatable, forms of cancer. But only if it's detected early enough. It's a sensitive part of the body. Believe me, I'd rather not have to go thru it. But it's quick and beats the shit out the alternatives. To be clear, I'm not saying Lamar Hunt didn't do all he could. He may have and sometimes you just draw a bad card. It's also harder to fight it when your elderly. But most of the time, early detection is the key to beating it and the easier you catch it, the easier the treatment is. Here endeth the rant!
I thought you were supposed to get checked starting at age 30? That's one of the many reasons that I was dreading my next birthday.
What the hell? First Doug Hamilton. Then Gooch Myernick And now Lamar Hunt. This has been an absolutely horrible year for U.S. Soccer
Sorry to hear the news..He truely cared about advancing the sport of soccer in this country and his work will long be remembered and appreciated..
If your doctor says 30, don't argue. My doc started me at 35 but the medical community may not be lockstep on the exact age.
Thank you for everything, Mr. Hunt. Rest in peace. Guys, go ahead and get yourself checked regularly after you've hit 30.
