Default Acceleration

How do you coaches teach your players to accelerate with the ball? Also, what work outs do you expect them to do to build explosive speed?

What is expected from a 17 year old in terms of running on your high school teams (or whatever teams)?

You can excellerate with the ball in a number of ways. One way if you have space to run in that is exactly what you should do run in that space and not dribble. You run with the ball you don't need close control at those times.

You just have to work on the timing of it so you do have close control of the ball when you get close to pressure.

Also as soon as you beat a player immediately step into that players lane of pursuit so he can't recover, and get on your shoulder. You immediately put the oppenent directly behind the dribbler so the defender has no angle to get on your shoulder. Then you can forget about him, and look to beat the next guy.

Plyometrics, I especially like hurdling and sprinting in between those hurdles for older players. This has to be done in the off season if you have an off season, for it to do any good during the season.

Can put some other plyometrics into your pre practice and pre game warmups use something like this

1. Skipping
2. Striding
3. Side Shuffling Right
4. Side Shuffling Left
5. Back Peddling
6. Skipping for Height
7. Skipping for Distance
8. Sprinting
9. Bounding Right
10. Bounding Left
11. Backwards Sprinting
12. Bounding from the left foot to the right foot
13. Broad jumps
14. Sprinting
15. Walking Lunges
16. High Knees
17. Butt Kicks
18. Straight Leg Run
19. Sprinting
20. Rest and Stretch
