I have heard talk of "reds" but I have a few possibly more interesting suggestions of my own: lakers (stadium by the lake) x-men or ex-men (exhibition grounds) maple leafs (i know many will hate this) b-mo boys (bmo field) what does everybody else think a good unofficial nickname might be?
nah more like "ex-soccer players" i like the nickname like Northmen, Maple Front, Canuck Guard or something ala supporters names
One that was kicked around for Canada was "Red Surge" (google red serge for context if you don't know the term). It would seem appropriate for TFC. Also, when is this forum going to get a tagline? ...its all the rage.
thats a good one- here are some more, not very serious on all of them- lakeshore lads smokers (big smoke) universals (toronto is center of universe) bacon boys (back bacon boys?) yorkies, yorkers queen city killers, queen city ___________ greys (our away jerseys are grey at least, and i dont think that one is taken!) hogtown hammers T's i'm obviously reaching here... surely someone can think of something better!
Good point ossieend. A nickname is meant to describe the identity of a team that slowly takes shape through the club's history. It should describe the team in a way that is relevant to all the fans. So rather than pasting on something that may sound catchy for the moment... wait for the team to make an agreeable name for themselves that won't suddenly lose it's flare. C'mon, do you really think the Newcastle fans came up with the ''Magpies'' several months before their first game?? Butzol
nicknames do happen.....but i nthe media right now, people are saying FC Toronto (which clearly isnt even right) of just calling them FC. now FC is not a nickname...and should not be acceptable the idea is to come up with a nickname and then have all the fan groups use it until the team adopts it. thats a way that it can just happen. we cannot have this team called FC. and the reds.....not a fan either. i vote THE YORKIES. toronto was called York. Fort York is right nearvby as well.
nothing will be pasted on- mlse stated that at the get-go. i agree that the process should be organic, but what difference does it make how the name is first conceived? the organic process will still surely determine what people end up calling them. there's no harm in speculating what it may be or perhaps coming up with something that ends up catching on. i sure hope it isn't magpies.
But the FC isn't the nickname, it's part of the official name. Now, I know that in North America the sport is called soccer more often than football, so clearly the FC sounds a little strange. The best thing to do is stop referring to the team as FC yourselves and just use Toronto, or the city MLS team etc. Anickname is far less formal eg. Revolution isn't the New England nickname, The Revs is.
None of the fans refer to the team as FC, but the uneducated media, who need a nickname, does. This is why the nickname issue came up so early. The media's usage of "FC" or "the FC" is making most of us cringe.
Yes and no. Revolution isn't the same as Hotspur. Since it was created in the mid 90's, "The New England Revolution" is how it's addressed like The New England Patriots. Since we fans of the beautiful game tipically frown on the whole mascot in name thing, "Revs" is adopted by the fans as well as the media (because it's shorter). As for Toronto, it'd be great if the fans adopted "leaves" as a correction to the spelling of the owner's hockey team. Then again, some may see that as fans wanting them to "leave" town.
If a few of you contacted the local media and maybe the team. Do you think they'd listen if you just asked them to drop the FC? Got to be worth a try.
NorthMen it was one of the choices for the actual name of the club and i liked it from the beggining, considering that the team is only playing teams from the states (except for the occasional friendly) we are the Northmen!!
Mounties. That name has respect and class everywhere around the world, and it represents Canada well.
