So we're going to a caps game. Heres the thread. Ive got 4 or 5 people coming. Kick off (sic) is at 7:00pm Vs. Anaheim Ducks (man, thats not hard to make fun of, what were they thinking?) and I don't know what section yet. Any other relevant info? Probably. Do I know it? Hell no.
Re: La Barra Brava (NHL Div.) Perhaps it's just me, but I think the date might be helpful. December 8, 2006
Re: La Barra Brava (NHL Div.) I've arranged my work schedule, so I'll be there. What do we do? Meet somewhere (such as a bar) near the Verizon Center and do the walk-up thing? Here's a list of Chinatown bars. The first one listed (RFD Washington) sounds pretty interesting...300 types of bottled beer, plus many more on tap. And it's pretty close to Verizon:
It was originally the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, with Disney as the owner. They piggy-backed on the "success" of the Mighty Ducks movies.
If I had the wings of an eagle ... If I had the ass of a crow ... I'd fly over An-a-he-im .... ******** it. ******** U Ref! I'll be taking the metro in from work so as long as we're meeting somewhat close by, anywhere's fine by me.
Re: La Barra Brava (NHL Div.) Im not sure we want to try to pry the Barra from a bar with 300 beers. But if we must meet there, who am I to stop it? We are going out after, right?
Re: La Barra Brava (NHL Div.) I guess you told her! Damn busy bodies anyway.... BTW, Dave Brother and I will be there...for the game at least.
Turns out my buddy's wedding got moved without him telling me. To the weekend I already have unbreakable plans to have an early Christmas celebration with my family. The good news is that I may be free to make this game. I need to double check my calendar for December, but I think I should be good to go for this.
Yes, I'll be attending--coming down on the MARC train, I guess, from Baltimore and then taking the Metro to whatever stop is closest. Some feedback on this as it gets closer--AND a place AND TIME for us to meet up before heading in, not just a date. -Patricia
The closest Metro stop is Gallery Place/Chinatown, which quite litterally, is underneath Verizon Center. The three exits are pictured on the map that Seahawkdad posted.
OK, thanks. Those metro stops can look close together on a map, but when you get to the real thing, they're a lot farther away than you would have guessed. I assume the Washington Convention Center is now what is the Verizon Center--everything has to be named after a corporation these days. -Patricia
Why does this not surprise me? Just teach us some things to holler in Russian to root for the Caps, please! -Patricia
I can help with some things to yell at the ref in Russian. Zhri govno i zdohni! (offensive, slightly attacking towards ref) Yob tvoyu mat! (suggests the referee copulate with his own mother) Huy tebye v glaz! (suggesting the referee may have another individual's anatomy stuck in their eye, preventing him from making accurate calls) P'yan v stel-ku (describing the likely mental state of many members of the Barra) Svoloch' (I believe this one's an accurate replacement for the latter part of the "who's your father, never had one referee" song) U tebya cho ruki iz jopi rastut? (questioning the agility and skill of a player who may have made a mistake) Of course those could all be wrong. Maybe Vlad will get a big fat laugh out of that though.
Google is my friend. My Polish swearing is stronger than my Russian--though from the looks of things, the languages aren't as far apart as one might think. Does "kurva" work in Russian too? I know that's Polish, and think it carries over into Croatian. Used to know some interesting strings involving that one. If we ever do a Barra event at a Sumo tournament, I can come up with Japanese too. Took a semester of it in middle school and all I came away with were things that would make most of the Barra blush. Took the same amount of German in high school and French in college, but unfortunately never quite got past the basic insults.
kurva is not used much, but everyone understands it. we use something that sounds like sukah instead.
Until you mentioned it, I didn't realize the map was dated. The Verizon center is labled MCI Center on that map. And all three Metro exits are at most a block's walk from the Arena, and no more than 2.5 blocks from RFD.
