Not sure what to make of Alexi's comments. I get the impression he's pushing for Cobi to retire - to save Alexi from having to make an unpleasant/tough decision regarding his status. Maybe I'm reading too much into it - but he didn't seem to me to be too supportive of Cobi continuing to play here.

Born there. But I think he grew up in Southern California (Woodland Hills?), went to college here, has his family and roots here now.
Its really hard to think of him playing for another club, as I think he is very proud of the fact that he was LAG from day one and the only player in the league to stay with his original club from the start of the league.
On the other hand, I could see a time coming (maybe not this year) when he wants to keep playing and LAG thinks they can do better. He is a proud enough player that I do not think he would retire if he thought he still had the chops, even if his coach and GM don't agree.

Re: What future for Cobi ???
For me it comes down to the fact that he is making 200K a year. If he would be willing to cut his salary to 100K I could see it, but not at what he is currently making. And I'm thinking he is probably too proud to take a cut.
I don't expect to see him back.

"It's not something that I'm happy about, that one of the biggest cheers in our stadium during our introductions is for a 36-year-old player," said Galaxy general manager Alexi Lalas, a former teammate of Jones with Los Angeles and with the national team.
Lalas clarified his stance.
"I love Cobi to death. But I want to make sure that we also have incredible recognition of stars that are young, and that are 26 and developing."
|
Jesus...when those developing 26 year olds do as much for American soccer that Cobi Jones has then they'll get as much respect from me as Cobi does. Until then, deal with the fact that you have a legend on the squad, Alexi.
