OT - The Vikings are coming
Hiya. Me and my mate are planning to visit California for a bit of rape and plunder next year, and if possible watch the mighty Quakes. So if anyone could provide a bit of information of what to see and do in and around San Jose it would be very much appreciated. We would also like to know about some good hotels (not too expensive, we are only poor students) also how does the MLS season run? We would like to come over in the autumn, as we are going to Potugal in the summer to follow Denmark in the European championship finals (if we qualify that is)
Cheers

I saw on the UEFA web site that the Euro 2004 championship match is on July 4th. The MLS regular season doesn't end until October, so you have a lot of time to fly over to catch a game. Obviously, you'll want to check the Quakes schedule for next year.
And yes, please do bring Wade back with you...

Nothing against San Jose, but you will want to stay in San Francisco and drive down to San Jose for the match. Much more to do in SF and its only about a 45 minute drive down to Spartan Staduim. Plus I bet if you ask nicely you could get a Quakes fan to put you up instead of a hotel.

There is some information at this site about travelling to various US cities for soccer purposes.
http://www.dansoccerzone.com/SoccerGuide/
Once here, choose Major League Soccer and you will get a list of all the MLS cities. The San Jose entry was written by Darrin Howells (who posts sometimes on here as "casbahman") and Guy Gayle (who posts more frequently as "ggayle").
The information is pretty specific to San Jose, but don't forget we are about 50 miles from San Francisco which has a lot of things to see.
For cheap hotels... well, this is not a cheap area. There are relatively inexpensive places to stay, but they can be pretty inconvienent, like nowhere near public transportation or anything you would want to see. Getting around can be difficult too if you don't rent a car -- there are trains and buses but they don't run everywhere and they don't run as often as you would probably like.

RE: San Francisco
You don't want to stay in in San Francisco as long as Willie Brown is the mayor there. Chaos in the street, police corruption, murder and mayhem, traffic nightmares, filthy streets and aggressive, homeless bums. Oh, and let's not forget the over-priced hotels and other places to stay and those a student could afford would be in run down areas.
Oh yeah, San Francisco is much better

Thanks for the info. We should be able to afford car rent and a decent hotel, I was thinking more of thoose 4 stars hotel and stuff like that, no reason to go on vacation if you dont have any money to spend.
