12 games in the season doesn't seem like much. Did MLS plan on having more games when the reserve league was created a few years ago?
i really dont understand why they just dont play 32 reserve games. Travel costs cant be that much more for 8 additional players on away games. 8 plane tickets (2000-4000) 3-4 hotel rooms ($500) Misc. (500) 16 road games ($45,000-$75,000 per season) Thats just an estimate it could be more but i dont see why we cant have the whole team travel and play a reserve game following the regular match. Perhaps too many games increases injury chances and team rosters are thin enough where they want to reduce it? But still 12 games is pitifully low.
Is there a place to play? What about after Sunday and Wednesday games? My question is: Why is it a 12 game season? 11 makes more sense. Sachin
Track 1: Thank god for the single table. These games are so meaningful, I never miss a single one. Track 2: The attendance is so awful, they should eliminate the Reserve Division, don't they realize how bad it looks.
It was created last year. I don't think the plan was ever for more "MLS Reserve Division" games. However, the "Reserve" teams play plenty of other games. There was some discussion about the possibility of Reserve teams either playing regular games against USL teams, but I've never heard any follow up to that.
That's a lot of money for MLS. Agreed. I don't get that one either. The only thing that would make it better is promotion/relegation. Playing a fall thru spring schedule would help as well.
In NY, recently they have played right after the first team game. Personally, I think this is the best way to handle it. The stadium is already open; let them play then. Besides, it lets the hardcore supporters actually see all the players on the team. Such as the young youth talent we will see starting in a couple years time.
And have a "Beckham Rule" for the reserves... Wait, I forgot BS Orthodoxy (tm). Is the "Beckham Rule" the Way of the Righteous Fan or the Path of Evil?
You should simply find out where the respective reserve division plays and show up, whenever/whereever it is.
I imagine the whole reserve team thing is one to be revisited after MLS deals with how its going to set up its academy system.
While most Reserve Division games are open to the public, not all of them are. I know that standalone Reserve Division games at Giants Stadium are closed due to the fact that the Red Bulls would be charged a boatload of money if the public were allowed in the stadium. But yeah, most of the games are open and free.
You guys are missing the most important part of this thread. If Kansas City wins out they get the title.
RSL had to have a reserve game closed to the public recently. They play their reserve games up in Park City (@7500ft elevation, IIRC). It snowed so they had to move the game. They played at the University of Utah but had to be a closed event because of the lack of stadium personel.
That might work for NY (except for the $$ issue mentioned above), but at DC what's great about the games is that I can get right next to the field. To get pictures I often station myself halfway between the corner flag and the goal along the goal line, about 3 yards back. The sense of the power of the game really comes through when you're that close. That feel wouldn't be there in a stadium. This picture shows how close the fans are to the field:
Yes, it's like this in Columbus too. It's fun to be 3 yards away and hear what the players are saying to each other and the refs.
It's not always convenient or possible to play a reserve game at 10pm on a Saturday night. Most reserve games are played on Sunday mornings before the visiting team leaves for home.
