Default Odonkor to Betis for app. 6.5 mio Euro!

Right now on the newsticker. For that kind of money, we had to sell him. He is fast, technically limited and can be used as a weapon in certain situations. But 6.5 mio is serious money.

Good luck to him in Spain!

Westline are the only ones reporting it being close to being done. But as "jonam" said, they are the most reliable BVB source out there.

For the record, I don't like the deal. I think 6.5M is too little for a guy who could still play a major role in the team's future.

Especially as Betis just picked up 25M.

I thought something was missing from our offense on Saturday and that "something" was Odonkor. Without him out there, Stuttgart were able to put more pressure on Pienaar and Pienaar had his worst match to date.

However, I'd be more accepting of an Odonkor deal if they take that money and get some IMMEDIATE help in central defense.

Not a player 'for the future', but some IMMEDIATE f#cking help!!!

I don't like this deal. Not at all.

But as I say above, if BVB takes that money and gets IMMEDIATE help in central defense, I'd be more accepting of it.

Everything about this proposed, possibly finalised deal seems incredibly strange to me. First of all, why are Betis offering almost €7 million for Odonkor in the first place? I know Joaquin's up and left but paying a sum as large as this for a young German winger from the Ruhr Valley? Now I really like the guy and was certainly very proud of him at the World Cup, but to say he's still a season or two away from turning his pace and raw skills into consistent ability is something of an understatement. Not to mention the fact that he's going to a team that struggled badly last season, and is being asked to replace one of that club's best players of the last decade.

Secondly, why are we selling him that cheaply? His wages are hardly astronomical and if he develops to his full potential, he's going to worth a hell of a lot more than just £5 million quid. Perhaps this is just the reality of our financial situation, and is meant as a counter-balance to the sums paid for Valdez, Frei and Tinga. Nevertheless, the transfer window still has some time to run, why not wait until closing time to see just how badly they really need a replacement for Joaquin.

If it turns out that all that's transpired is that Betis have made an offer and Odonkor just wants to to examine it, as was mentioned in the press a day or two ago, then I don't want to have spoken too soon. Nor will the sky fall in if indeed this deal does go through. Unlike Koller, Rosicky and possibly Metzelder, however, this one I didn't see coming and I'd always prefer we hung on to as many local players with potential as we can.

Certainly for the sake of €7 million.

I think Betis wants to bring in a "name" player for as little money as possible. Why?

To apppease their fans for as little money as possible. Odonkor came out of the World Cup as one of "names to look out for" in 2010.

I think Betis wants to use some of that press to take some of the heat off management for Joaquin's sale.

I think we're selling so "cheaply" because the management of this club "thinks small" when it comes to outgoing overseas transfers. They always have.

For one of three reasons:

1) They saw 6.5M and went "ga-ga".

2) They just want to get rid of Odonkor and they think that's as much money as they'll get.

3) They aren't "clever" enough to do so.

I'm thinking it's "1" or "3". More than likely, "1".

I believe that Westline article says Odonkor is in Sevilla for a medical.

BVB never comments before a deal is done or it is imminent. But the fact that they put the rumor on the official website tells me that a deal is imminent.

No, the sky won't fall in, but I think we're better off with Odonkor as an option than with another 6.5M in the bank.

I just don't get how this club tells us over and over again that we want to finish fifth or higher and then goes and sells off a potential key player in our future growth for 6.5M Euros.

To me, the "local player" aspect doesn't mean squat. If we can get a kid from Munich to come in and do what Odonkor did, I'd cheer just as loudly for him.

I guess Ricken will move into that spot on the team or maybe Sahin will be trained to provide Odonkor's crosses.

Not some other young kid "for the future", but someone who can step and and have an IMMEDIATE IMPACT on our defense whether he be young or "older". (Tinga "older", not Woerns "older")

Right now, I just don't f#cking like it........

Reuters says the deal is done, but no other English-speaking outlet does. I think they may be misunderstanding the initial reports.
