Default Stupid Re-Name the WIZ Thread

Precident has been set for the re-naming of MLS teams that have changed venues, owners and/or whatever:

Dynamo - Earthquakes - Clash
Red Bulls - MetroStars
FC Dallas - Burn
Wizards - WIZ

So, with the real possibility the Wizards will change venues and owners and whatever... I propose we put some serious thought into re-naming/re-branding the team with a distinctive image the nation/league can truly be proud of.

This is NOT a thread to rip on other people's suggestions. Consider it a brainstorming session. ALL ideas are valid without judgement. The evaluation process will come later. Right now, please limit your posts to suggestions for a new team name (include any rationale you feel is needed).

I agree, I have been thinking this is a good opportunity for a rebranding. Some think the kit is too "smurfish", maybe we could darken the shade of blue just a shade but otherwise I like it. I think we can do better on the shield and club name though.

I have come to the conclusion, as anyone who reads my posts on other boards already knows, that teams should mostly be named for their home, and let their supporters come up with unofficial nicknames over the years. SC Kansas City would do the trick for me, others may disagree. The shield is the tough part. I am just not a very creative person, so I would have trouble with that.

No FCs, SCs, REALs, etc.

I admit, SC is the best choice, because it stands for "soccer club," which is what we call it. "Real" blows cause it's Spanish, and "FC" blows cause it's european. Lets be American in the sense that we don't copy some overseas identity, but also lets NOT be American when it comes to naming the team after a vicious animal or mythological creature or something. I like how in the old days of sports, you were named after colors, cities, symbols, people, etc. relevant to your location (grays, blues, red/white sox, twins, yankees, maple leafs, etc.)

Kansas City. Says it all. Let our colors, shield and play on the field dictate our identity.

They will of course always be known as "the Wizards."

Keep the name the "Wizards" keep the colors. Just change the frickin gay pride logo. So cheese and they wonder why they don't sell very much mechandise.

If you are going to change, I guess my personal fav is Union Kansas City.

Oh and please no buffalo's. I am just not a fan of it.

I'm also in favor of dropping the Wizards moniker. It will always be tied to the Wiz in Kansas Citians mind. The Wizard of Oz is not KC history. It's pop culture and has no real connection to the people who live in this town.

I think a rebranding would allow us to say "new ownership, new approach to soccer" and start with a clean slate in the minds of many fans.

The simplest compromise would be dropping the nickname and going with Kansas City FC/SC/nothing as it would allow some to still use the Wizards name. The "beige" factor on this though is awfully high, but that might fit in well in KC.

If we were going to use a name in the club, something commenting on the binary nature of our town would work. This is the Kansas side of the city's first professional team, and it's a sign that our town is much more of an equal partnership between two cities/states than ever before. It's a fairly unique situation, and would allow us to use KC but still give homage to the state that it resides in.

Something signifying that like Union KC would work for me. I'm sure there are lots of variations of the word "two", "dual", "alliance", "partnership" or something similar that would work.

I'm not sure I like it, but the word Gemini is seen as "twin" due to it's two brightest stars Castor and Pollux (twin brothers who after they died alternated days as gods in Olympus and mortals in hell). There all sorts of options along this line. Maybe this is something for the badge instead of the name though.

If we're going for a "two-into-one" kind of there here, I think we're missing the most obvious option - one that gives us instant credibility.

Kansas City United.

...Just kidding.

Honestly, I'm neutral on the Wizards name. I'm not really attached to it, but I don't think it definitely has to go, either. Sppon is right, though, a new logo would be nice. In fact, it doesn't really even have to be a whole new logo- I actually kind of like the shape of our current badge. Just replace the rainbow with something else.

I would be ok with Union Kansas City, though I also wouldn't mind something plain like Kansas City SC.

I like the whole Union KC idea...

personally I really hate the idea of being just Kansas City SC or Kansas City FC or whatever

keep the colors, change the shield.
