Well with Joe Zewe and Robbie Russell here, might as well start a new thread.

    Summer transfers so far

    Viborg FF:

    IN:
23-yo striker, Joe Zewe, USA (B1909)
27-yo right back, Robbie Russell, USA (Rosenborg)

    OUT:
31-yo defender, Mikael Rosén (formerly known as Mikael Gustavsson), Swe, 3 caps (Halmstads IF)
31-yo midfielder, Alex Nørlund (Vejle BK)
22-yo central defender, Thomas Guldborg Christensen (Vejle BK)
31-yo midfielder, Stefan Bidstrup (contract expired)
    29-yo midfielder, Christian Magleby (retired)
    24-yo forward, Kenneth Fabricius (SønderjyskE)
22-yo forward, John Dyring (Thisted FC)
    ---

Viborg are going to need atleast one or two more quality players in this transfer window to make up for all the players they have lost. The 26-yo central defender/midfielder, Raoul Kouakou from Swedish Malmø FF seem to be a realistic option. Kouakou has won 4 caps for the Ivory Coast.

    Viborg FF axe head coach

The board today axed both Sporting director Flemming Nielsen and head coach Ove Christensen to due to a dispute between the management and head coach Ove Christensen + the players. After their last Superliga match a very angry Ove Christensen told the media that he was not going to renew his contract with Viborg at the end of this season. He found it unprofessional and scandalous that he was left with a squad of only 19 players, and with two of them being signed only a few days before league start, having made it practically impossible to prepare for this season. The players were also talking to the media agreeing with their head coach.

The fact that Sporting director Flemming Nielsen used to be assistent coach to Ove Christensen but then got promoted to become his boss is also a fact that made this situation impossible to solve without atleast one of them leaving the club. But since the Viborg players fully support their head coach in the despute against the management and Sporting director, then it would probably only make things worse if the board chose to keep the Sporting director and only axed coach Christensen, so in the end they chose to get rid of both of them.

To take over as new head coach is the assistent coach at Viborg and former Glasgow Rangers coach Tommy Møller Nielsen (son of former Danish NT coach Richard Møller Nielsen)..

New assistent coach is going to be 43-yo Stephen Lowe, who started his playing career at Aston Villa and later got his debut in the English league for Wolverhampton, also earning 9 youth NT caps for England before moving to Denmark to play for Herning, Vejle and later Viborg in the late 80's and early 90's..

    Two Nigerian players to Viborg

The two Nigerian internationals at Viborg Paul Obiefule and Kingsley "Mojo" Onyenekwe now get two more Nigerian compatriots to the club, since Viborg today signed 1½-year deals with the 18-årige forward Christian Muomaife and 19-yo attacking midfielder Chukwunonso "Nonso" Unuegbu. Both players are from Viborg FF’s Football Academy in Nigeria.

Seems like they better go find some more bodies and soon.

I thought that they were limited to three non EUs on the 18-man game day roster. Why would they have gone out and signed these guys with two Americans, two nigerians and a Brazilian already under contract? Are they planning on using these guys as developmentals?

Your allowed all the non EU players you want in your squad, you just cant use more than 3 of them in the games at the same time... meaning that you could have 3 in the lineup and a few on the bench.

Now Viborg got 4 Nigerians, 2 Americans and 1 Brazilian, but 2 of the 4 Nigerians are developmentals and not expected to get much 1st team action this season.

    Superliga, July 29 and 30:

    AC Horsens - Viborg FF 2-2 (1-0)
    1-0 Gilberto Macadena 14'

    3 tackles 3
    3 corners 6
    14 fouls 13
    2 offsides 1
    49% possession 51%

Two former 2nd division players got their debut in this match. The young Brazilian 2nd division topscorer and player of the year Gilberto Macadena playing from start for AC Horsens and getting instant success, plus the American Joe Zewe who replaced Viborg's Christopher Poulsen in the 2nd half and a few minutes later saw his first shot hit top bar. So no goal for Zewe but still one point for Viborg with the help of an assist by the newly signed American defender Robbie Russell and two goals by Jacob Olesen.

    3 offside 0
    44% possession 56 %

Though it perhaps doesnt show in the stat above, then Vejle was absolutely run over by an excellent playing and very strong looking AaB. besides the two goals, then AaB also saw two of their attempts hit the top bar in the first 45 minutes. Vejle ofcause got in even more trouble when Henrik Smedegaard had just entered the pitch and then was shown a straight red card 30 seconds later. It was btw not only the AaB forwards looking dangerous, since besides the two goals from the young Danish U21 NT defender Michael Jakobsen, then the American defender Danny Califf made two assists, by a header to Jakobsen and by a freekick to Rade Prica.

An absolut well played and high paced match. FCM produced the most chances, hit the top bar but also misused thier opportunities while Brøndby perhaps looked a bit more sharp in attack, so all-in-all I guess it was a deserved draw. In any case, it was top quality entertaniment, with two teams attacking from start to finish. Still, the Brøndby defense did not look too good and looking at this rather even match against FCM and how well AaB are playing at the moment, then Brøndby need some serious reinforcements if they want to get the upper hand in the fight for Silver and Bronze medals this season. As it is, I think they can forget all about the championship this season.

Any impression on this guy, Ceres? 9 goals in 61 games for a forward doesn't seem like such a great strike rate.

I think he has mostly been used as a winger in a 4-4-2 and not as a forward.

Viborg was up against the mighty Scandinavian Champions and had hoped that FCK was thinking more of the CL qualification match against Ajax than this round in the Superliga, but FCK proved them wrong by simply outclassing Viborg in this match, playing some very good short passing football. Though swedish Frederik Berglund saw his first attempt disallowed for being offside, then FCK kept pushing forward and Berglund was sharp and on target when he got his 2nd chance to score assisted by an excellent pass from the Swedish International Tobias Linderoth. Same Linderoth also made the "assist" for the 2nd FCK goal, when his free kick hit the top bar and bounced straight to Jesper Grønkjær who hardly could miss scoring by a header.

Michael Silberbauer had just entered the pitch when he got the chace to get one-on-one with the Swedish Viborg keeper John Alvbåge and he finished Viborg off by making it 3-0. Though Viborg got rewarded a penalty, the FCK win was never in any danger. Robbie Russell played all 90 minutes and I guess did fairly well in this very difficult match, while Joe Zewe did not get to play.

Newly signed Haitian Jean Philippe Peguero got to score by a header in his debut match for Brøndby, but also the former Man United defender Mark Howard and the young Australian forward David Williams got their debut in this match for Brøndby. AC Horsens was not much of a threat to Brøndby, though the Brøndby defense was not all that convincing, but the Horsens team for the most part looked out-paced and just seemed to lack the over-all quality to be a real threat in attack, when Brøndby finally slowed down the pace and let Horsens produce a few very good opportunities in the 2nd half.

"10 shots for a $1" it seems when looking at the score boards. 26 goals in 6 games is just crazy, but in compare with the boring almost "WC-06 like" 2005/06 version of the Superliga, then this season has been highly entertaining this far. Good attacking minded football, especially from AaB, Brøndby, FC Midtjylland and FCN, while FCK have just looked very strong. Though it was a bit sad for newly promoted Vejle in this round, since they actually put up a very good fight, only being 1-2 behind and looking good, when their key defensive midfielder Steffen Kielstrup was shown the red card by the referee. Being only 10 men it was to be a mission impossible, despite the goal to Vejle by Alex Nørlund. The attendance figures on the other hand have not been impressing so far. In this round of the superliga only the Brøndby attendance managed to beat the 7,571 attendance at the AGF Aarhus match in the Viasat Sport Division.

As for the newly signed players, then AaB's Rade Prica and FCM's Christian Olsen just seem to keep scoring. Perhaps not all that surprising that the former Hansa Rostock AM/F and Swedish international has had success at AaB, but it is very much a surprise to see the 22-yo former DS (4th level) striker Christian Olsen in 2nd place on the Superliga topscorers list.

FC Midtjylland has btw signed a 3-year contract with Esbjergs former German U21 international, 24-yo Kolja Afriyie, who is suppose to be the replacement for Rasmus Daugaard in right back position. The transfer fee has not been disclosed, but, Esbjerg say that they are having a look at a foreign defender to replace Afriyie.

Unfortunately ther are still no highlights available from this highly entertaining 4th round of the superliga :( .

    Lol.

I was mostly just wondering if AGF were really horrible and NIF just got lucky or if we were actually good enough to warrant some hope for sundays game against Sønderjyske. ;)

edit: Hm, apparently there is some sort of filter here.

Viborg seemed highly efficient and lucky, playing very defensively and creating next to nothing but still being 2 goals up after 50 minutes. However, a few minutes after the 2nd Viborg goal the Silkeborg coach made some tactical changes, replacing Michael Hansen and Thomas Poulsen with Kim Olsen and Thomas Raun and this made Silkeborg look even more on top and also paid off with Olsen and Raun securing a deserved victory. As you can see in the highlights then Robbie Russell and the other Viborg defenders didnt look good in this match. Joe Zewe got to play the last 27 minutes, replacing Thomas Andie. As you also can see in the highlights below, then it was the first time that the brothers Christopher (Viborg) and Thomas Poulsen (Silkeborg) faced each other in the Superliga. Christopher btw made the assist for the 2nd Viborg goal.

In the top clash of this round between the Danish and Scandinavian Champions FCK and Bronze medalists OB Odense, is was Odense being the better playing and most dangerous looking team in the first half, so it was deserved that it was Tobias Grahn scoring the first goal of the match, but unfortunately for OB, same Grahn went from hero to being the bad guy in the 2nd half when he was shown a yellow card for diving, perhaps intentionally tripping over his own legs, and then a bit later making a foul on Jesper Grønkjær, earning him his 2nd yellow card. You could argue if the first yellow card was a bit harsh, but the red card to Grahn totally turned this match around, since the FCK coach then moved Michael Gravgaard from defense to attack and it from then on was FCK looking dangerous and being in control, totally dominating a 10 men OB who had big trouble keeping FCK from scoring. Gravgaard secured the draw for FCK by a header and an excellent assist by Grønkjær.

Just like last season, Brøndby still seem to have big trouble when playing in Jutland. Though Brøndby did dominate the first half of this match, it was newly promoted Randers being the better team in the last 45 minutes and also producing some big opportunities against a not all that solid looking Brøndby defense. Like FCK and Odense, then perhaps also the Randers and Brøndby players seemed a bit tired after their Europa Cup games this past week.

It was one of the most attacking minded and most scoring Superliga team against the poorest defense in the league, so you would expect a big victory to FCN against newly promoted Vejle. However, despite FCN clearly dominating this match they also misused their chances, so Vejle got away with a small defeat. But Heath Pearce and the young talented FCN team now surprisingly lead the Superliga !.

It was the poorest match that AGF has played as far back as I can remember, so it's safe to say that it was a really horrible performance by AGF, still, you also managed to beat Sønderjyske, but despite the very good start I seriously doubt you can stay in the fight for promotion all season.

Well, the main goal is just to stay in the first division, the long-term goal is to get promoted to the SAS league with 4-5 years I think.
Also, unless Sønderjyske does something dramatic you'll have nothing to fear from them. I believe the correct term is "piv elendig".
They wasted even more chances than we did. :)

Thanks for the report on the Danish League.

I watched the highlights, Robbie Russell didn't exactly cover himself in glory.

Danish Superliga side Viborg have signed a 4½-month contract (until december 31) with the talented 23-yo Australian goalkeeper Chris Sharpe from the danish 4th level side B1909.

Well, Russell (and Zewe) signed with Viborg when the team was in a big crisis, with the head coach and players being unhappy with the management because the team was left with only 17 squad players, making it impossible to prepare for this season, hardly even being able to field 11 players (due to injuries) in some of the pre-season games and not even the coach knowing if they were getting any reinforcements, since the management simply didnt seem to have talks with their head coach at all.

Then right after the 'last minute' signings of Russell and Zewe, the management chose to axe both the Sporting director and head coach, so as you can understand then Viborg is very ill prepared for this season in compare with the other Superliga teams. On top of this it ofcause also take some time for Russell to adjust to his new team-mates and the different style of play in compare with the Norwegian league.

Brøndby dominated from start, but as soon as Brøndby scored the first goal Viborg got more and more back into the match and also saw a very a good attempt by Steffen Højer hit the Brøndby woodwork . The 2nd half got very boring, with Brøndby playing to slow paced to look all that dangerous, while Viborg had nothing to offer in attack. most dangerous brøndby player was actually defender Per Nielsen producing a few decent attempts besides scoring the first brøndby goal. Newly signed Manchester United youth Adam Eckersley got a fairly good debut, playing all 90 minutes and making the assist to Brøndbys 2nd goal, while former Red Bull New York striker Jean-Philippe Peguero manage to score only a few minutes after having replaced Kasper Lorentzen, but unfortunately Peguero at the same time got knee injured and could be out for 7 to 8 month. Robbie Russell (27) has played the full 90 minutes for Viborg in all 6 Superliga games so far this season, while Joe Zewe (23) got to play the last 38 minutes of this very difficult away match. Zewe has now played 4 league games as a 2nd half sub (133 minutes in all) and is yet to score his first Superliga goal.

AaB and Danny Califf are back in first place so far in the Superliga by beating Randers 2-1, but it was a very narrow and not all that impressing win by AaB, since it was actually newly promoted Randers dominating the 2nd half, so AaB could praise their luck for the very poorly playing Randers defender, the Ghana International (10 caps) Issah Ahmed who not only made the clumsy looking penalty on Rade Prica leading to the first goal to AaB, but also handing the former Brazilian youth international "Cácá" the opportunity to score the winning goal for AaB in the end, when Ahmed almost made an owngoal that was saved by the Randers keeper but then "Cácá" being quick to pick up the rebound and finish Randers off. Danny Califf (26) has played from start to finish for AaB in all 6 Superliga games so far this season.

The best game of the day was at Fionia Park in Odense between OB and the young talented top team FCN from Sealand. The home team got away with a narrow 2-1 win in one of the more high paced and well played games so far this season. OB looked slightly better in a fairly even 1st 45 minutes, when both teams produced quite a few chances and no less that 15 crosses by the wingers from both teams, but to be honest it was more misfortune than anything else that kept FCN and especially last seasons 1st division topscorer Morten Nordstrand from scoring a goal. FCN dominated more and more as the game progressed, while OB looked very good at defending their lead, but with only 5 minutes left of the match, the FCN attacks finally paid off when Nordstrand managed to score his 4th goal of the Superliga season, by a very nice header. Though it didnt take all that long for OB to strike back, when the Brazilian free kick specialist Bechara showed his worth by providing an excellent assist to Ulrik Laursen, to secure the home win at the very end of the match. Like last season, Heath Pearce (22) has done very well as a regular starter in left back position for FCN this season, so it would not be a surprise if he finally moves abroad to join a bigger team in the next transfer window or perhaps at the end of this season.

Silkeborg seemed to own this match, but had trouble producing all that big opportunities against a well defending Horsens team, but just as the first 45 minutes seemed to come to a goalless end, Horsens showed their efficiency by the newly signed Swedish U19 International Rawez Lawan scoring on their first and only real opportunity. Though it was Silkeborg pusing forward and keeping the pressure on Horsens in the last 45 minutes as well, it was once again Horsens looking solid in defense while being highly efficient. This time by an excellent goal by the newly signed Brazilian Gilberto Macadena and Horsens even got close to a 3rd goal in the end, when an attempt by Yasin Avsi hit the top bar.

What looked to be a sure defeat to the home team, turned out to be quite a nightmare for for FCM, when they got two goals ahead but then was not able to keep their lead and even lost it all within the last 10 minutes of the match. surely a most amazing comeback by Esbjerg.

Vejle actually put up a very good fight in the first 45 minutes, but then got run over in the 2nd half, showing the main difference between a top team like FCK and a Vejle team that simply made the defensive mistakes and lacked the last bit of quality as you can expect from a newly promoted team. Unfortunately Vejle made Superliga history by being the first newly promoted team to lose their first 6 Superliga games in a row :( .

    Jocky Scott to Viborg

Viborg manager Tommy Møller-Nielsen is getting a new assistent coach/manager. Viborg have just signed a 1-year deal with the the 58-yo former Scottish international and Dundee legend Jocky Scott, who has lots of experience as manager of Aberdeen, Dundee, Hibernian, Plymouth Argyle and Notts County.

Assisten coach Stephen Lowe is going to stay at the club as an assistent, but only coaching the Viborg goalkeepers.
