Nice article about DC alum Ryan Nelsen. Apparently he was back in NZ for the first time in over two years and the locals did a write-up about his experience with Blackburn. DCU gets a mention. http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/0,2106,3673746a1823,00.html
I notice that at Blackburn the players have valet service. Ryan said that when he comes out the car is there, cleaned. Didn't some of the Nationals players have DC's version of a valet service when they left them at RFK during a road trip? Probably didn't get them back nice and clean, though...
United tried that last year. But Kenny Arena was asking for too much money to continue it for this season.
I just wanted to point out that Nelsen had absolutely nothing to do with Brazil's 4-0 win over the Kiwis the other day. Actually, this article says New Zealand is making pretty big strides. http://www.times.co.nz/cms/sport/agnew/2006/06/art100011862.php The team is described as: a makeshift side following the unavailability of Ryan Nelsen, Simon Elliott, Duncan Oughton, Tony Lockhead and Mark Paston. 4 of those 5 are either current or former MLSers. Has FIFA decided to give an automatic WC berth to the Oceania winner in the future?
Nellie's been in town training with the team. Sadly, he was just here for a couple of days. http://dcunited.mlsnet.com/MLS/news...ent_id=62974&vkey=news_dcu&fext=.jsp&team=dcu Bonus Alumni Coverage: Dema's also mentioned.....well, kinda.
i'm not saying he can't, it just might not be wise if his old lady has access to any sharp implements
Congrats to Nellie! From th post: "United Notes: Former all-star defender Ryan Nelsen has joined United in training sessions this week. The New Zealander, who now stars for English club Blackburn Rovers, is getting married in Minnesota on Sunday; he said he follows United's progress on the Internet and often watches the team's games, which usually kick off at 12:30 a.m. English time. As for his presence on the practice field, Nelsen said, "I always like to come back and hear [Nowak's] voice growling and moaning." ." I remember when our little nellie was being set up on dates from the radio show, now he's found himself a good Minnesota woman. Is this the teacher? Anybody know? Anyway, best of luck Nellie! EDITED: Mod, please move this to alumni. I thought I was in the alumni section. My bad.
Re: Congrats to Nellie! I love hearing that Nellie is in training with DC United. He did this last summer too, no?
For a team that's in serious need of mental toughness after throwing away their last two games, I can't think of a better addition to training than Ryan Nelsen.
Just caught this on the Rovers boards. Stephen Reid, a Rovers middie was talking about his teammates and here's what he said about Nellie: NELSEN NELLY the New Zealander isn't the best when it comes to dress sense I'm afraid. He's got a collection of dodgy cardigans and some of his tennis trainers are a tad on the outdated side too! Not the best. On the pitch though, I have to say that Nelly has been a revelation. He came here as a trialist but impressed enough to get a contract and he hasn't looked back. He's taken the Premiership by storm and has to go down as one of Mark Hughes' best ever signings. I have to say I always thought highly of Nellie but those dodgy cardigans are tainting my memories.
On Sky Sports news tonight, they mentioned that Portsmoth was going to put a bid in for Nelson from Blackburn. However, I couldn't seem to find anything on their site.
I havent heard anything about that... but Pompey was looking to sign Sol Campbell (who may be going to Turkey) so the Nelson thing may be true. Pompey just got a new owner with a lot of cash As a Pompey fan, I would love to see Nelsen there!
This on BBC Rumors page 7/14/06: Blackburn have rejected Portsmouth's £4m bid for Ryan Nelson. (The Sun)
That's nearly $7.4 m. Not bad for a player they picked up on a free transfer...would that make Nellie the most expensive field player ever to come out of MLS?
It probably depends on how you do the math. The American peso would skew your answer. You would have to compare GBP to GBP to get a fair reading.
To keep Nellie happy seems the Rovers are going to sign him to a new contract to keep him happy. http://www.blackburncitizen.co.uk/sport/sportheadlines/display.var.876898.0.nelsen_deal_in_sight.php
