Dynamo press release:

HOUSTON DYNAMO HIRES NEW CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

Chris Canetti, former Assistant General Manager with NY/NJ MetroStars, to start Monday

HOUSTON, Texas (Thursday, May 11, 2006) – Houston Dynamo General Manager Oliver Luck announced today the hiring of Chris Canetti as the Club’s new Chief Operating Officer.

Canetti joins the Dynamo after spending the better part of the last six years with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars, now known as Red Bull New York. His last position with the club was that of Assistant General Manager, which he held since April, 2005.

“I am extremely excited to be joining the Dynamo organization”, said Canetti. “It is a privilege and an honor to have such a tremendous opportunity. The team and the city are a perfect fit, and it's easy to see that there is a bright future ahead. I am eager to work side-by-side Oliver Luck, Dominic Kinnear and the entire Dynamo staff in the continued development of the organization”, he added.

Prior to joining the MetroStars, Canetti, a 1992 graduate of Quinnipiac University (Hamden, CT) with a BA in Communications, compiled 13 years of professional experience in the sports industry. He worked seven years with the New Haven Ravens, a Double-A minor league baseball affiliate of the Seattle Mariners and Colorado Rockies. There, he served as the team's General Manager. Canetti was named GM of the Ravens in October of 1997, and became, at age 26, the youngest GM in minor league baseball. Prior to being named GM, Chris served a variety of roles with the Ravens from 1994-97. His experience and determination make him a perfect fit for Houston’s newest sports franchise.

“We are delighted to have an experienced and extremely capable MLS team executive join Houston Dynamo”, said team President and General Manager, Oliver Luck. “He will bring a lot of enthusiasm and professionalism to our team.”

Hellelujia maybe this will be the answer for all of my frustrations with the running of this team. We are far to good and our fans and future deserve to have executives that will be dedicated and efficient.I truly hope this guy jumps in and rolls up his sleeves .Gets rid of all slackers and incompetents and produces for this club at the level it the coaches the players and the fans deserve. We are going to be known as the most successful franchise in MLS. Especially after we get the SSS.This is a great first step. Now if we can just get an owner.

Did they not have one before or are they filling a vacated role?

Default Is this a step back for Houston?

Should we be worried that someone with such an ahem, "successful" record with a the metros/red bulls is joining our staff? Last time I checked, the afroementioned team has not accomplished anything other than to alienate fans and in general become DCU's whipping boy. Maybe I'm being cynical, but I don't like this one bit, they shold have hired a local who knows the city, its politics and most importantly, its fans.

Oh yes! Welcome to AEG management boys and girls.

You need an executive position that needs to be filled . . . why AEG has loads of successful Metros management for you! Funny how the pressers for these guys always talk about their success . . .what success? No hardware, MPF and low attendance numbers. Nothing against ESC or the other Metro supporters that post here, obviously they care, just not sure the Metro FO did.

Hey you're not alone . . . we have Guppy as our top man. Tell you what, we'll trade you our President/GM for yours!

BTW - If you need any Metro Playoff Failure scarves to show your support for the new Metros management, come on over to the S8C website and buy them there. We actually gave some MPF scarves to our imported Metros/now Fire management last year during our first tailgate - they had a good sense of humor and immediately distanced themselves from MPF pointing in Guppy's direction.

My understanding is that it's a new position. Regardless of the particular merits of this individual, I think Indy's sentiment here is right. After Luck was announced as the team's President, I had hoped that the organization would also hire an operational person to manage day-to-day matters so that Luck could focus on strategic matters, like, say getting a long-term stadium deal in the Houston area and finding a purchaser for the team.

Even if Luck didn't have those strategic matters on his plate, it's generally advisable for most organizations that operate beyond the mom-and-pop level to have someone other than the chief executive (Luck) managing the daily operational matters. If an organization lacks that operational management level, then you often see mom-and-pop type of results.

As far as this particular individual, I'm not sure it's fair to blame him for the disfunctional organization formerly known as the MetroStars. That organization had a lot of problems with attendance, fan relations, media coverage, and on-field competitiveness well before he got there. It's questionable how much an Assistant GM could do to stop the rot that had already settled in the Meadowlands.

He apparently has nearly 19 years of professional sports management experience. Only about 6 of those years have any Metros taint.

Good points, I guess I'm just cynical because of what happened in Chicago. Hopefully for the good of the team , this works out.

Default Dynamo adds COO Chris Canetti from MetroStars

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/3858185.html

"Canetti, 35, will oversee all of the Dynamo's day-to-day operations. His hiring is a boost for a team in which only a few in management positions have professional team experience, let alone MLS experience."

And it shows
