Last Chance to Impress - MLS Week 5 (R)
One game is already complete.
The Galaxy & RSL went at it on ESPN2 and from a Nat standpoint only Landon Donovan looked good. He is in great form right now.
Pope was bad today and pretty much gifted a goal to the Galaxy on a play that will haunt me from now until the WC is over...ugh!
Albright looked decent going forward but defended less in 90 minutes against RSL than he would have to in 90 seconds against Italy. I just don't think he is what we need against teams with world-class attackers.
I honestly think those are the only guys from that game that have any chance at all of going to Germany so I won't get into how the others did.

Donovan is God.
Albright didn't suck today.
Pope did.

Solid defensively, got forward but did nothing offensively. Lost his man on a set piece late in the game that could have proven costly. Nothing spectacular on either end.

Let me slip on my flame-resistant suit and bring up one more name...
Not necessarily as a member of the 23, but as an alternate at least...
Cobi.
He came on, the game changed.
With the John O'Broken rearing its ugly head once again, it might not be a bad idea to have the Cobster's number on speed dial...
And as I type this, Benji scores for DCU...

And a very nice 20+ yard goal it was.

A roster spot for a guy who can't go 90 anymore?
I used to be a big Cobi for Germany proponent, but he's fallen off this year. Way off.

All true.
But he has at least played more than 5 minutes this season.
And he's scored a goal (which may put him in the mix for the possibly mythical 4th forward slot)...

No, Pope did not have a good game. But before we get bent out of shape, remember that his gaffe was caused by a pass coming up on him. On grass, he probably controls it before LD pounces. Yes, he's a professional, but given the pass and the surface I'm willing to cut him some slack. And LD is experienced enough to lurk close there, knowing how much more difficult it is to control the ball on turf. But I do fault Pope for not organizing the back line better. If LD had better teammates, they could have scored a few more. Seriously, maybe he is Baby Jesus. After all, he did a better job in parting the defense than Moses (Charlton Heston) did in parting the Red Sea in The Ten Commandments.

josh wolff will be playing the cobi role in Germany this year. late, speedy, somewhat versatile sub with experience and enough sense to take the ball into the corner in the 10 minutes if we have a lead.
