Let's discuss some other options at defensive midfield position and in defence.
I wonder if Ramelow and Nowotny are the answers to our problem in defense and the defensive midfield position. Both these guys have been red-hot in the last three games. (Check out Kicker ratings.
http://www.kicker.de/content/spielpl...er=&pvc_atab=7) Nowotny has been named to the team of the week for the third consecutive week. I don't think any other player has done that all year. Very impressive, indeed. Ramelow also seems to have gotten his act together as he's received excellent reatings in his club's last three wins over Stutgart, Kaiserslautern, and Borussia Dortmund, being named to the 11 of the game the last two weekends.
Ramelow, mind you, was rock solid in the 2002 World Cup, and, in particular, in the final against Brazil. If he can find his old form, he'd be the answer to our central defense woes, as his style is well-suited to partner a robust but skill-challenged player like Huth. He passes well, moves forward well, and is a good tackler who times his tackles superbly.
I don't know whether these ratings reflect more the individual performances of the players in question, or the strength of the team as a whole. Nevertheless, it's a good sign that two former National Team players are playing this well and this close to the World Cup. The question is whether they would recieve any consideration from Klinsmann and if they would be interested in returning to the National team fold.
If anyone has seen Leverkusen play recently, what's their verdict on the play of Ramelow and Nowotny, and would they be able to help the National Team?
