Slowly he became the owner of the number 10 shirt and along Tostao, formed one of the greatest partnerships in the game. Together they scored 472 goals, 224 being Dirceu’s, turning into the 2nd biggest goal scorer in the club’s history. Very short (1.63 m), skilled and goal scorer. Dirceu dribbled, made long passes, and also kicked with both legs. In the beginning of his career he imitated Garrincha, but over time his characteristics more closely resembled Pelé. The fans asked for Dirceu many times in the National team for World Cups. He was called by Joao Saldanha for the ’70 World Cup but Zagalo cut him right before the competition. According to Saldanha, Dirceu was going to be his secret weapon in ’70. Over there he played with Toninho Cerezo, Reinaldo, and other great players scoring many goals for Atletico winning 3 Mineiro Championships. Eder was known for his great technical ability and his cannon of a left foot. For Atletico he played 368 games and scored 122 goals. His great performances brought him to the National team. He became an absolute starter in 81 under Tele Santana displacing another great player in the position. He went to the Wold Cup in 82 and played with greats such as Zico, Socrates, Falcao and Junior. He didn’t disappoint and scored 2 goals and was a constant danger when playing combinations with Junior and Zico. He scored a beautiful goal against the Soviet Union in this particular World Cup and it's often regarded as one of the most astonishing goals scored in the World Cup. After his team mate, Falcao, let the ball go between his feet, Eder tampered the ball with his left foot before smashing the ball in the net with the same foot from a 25 meters range. Antônio Lima dos Santos DOB: January 18, 1942, in São Sebastião do Paraíso (MG) Position: Midfielder Every team needs their utility player. Lima was just that type of player for Santos. In Portuguese, his position was known as Curinga, or Joker. In English, I guess a more proper term would be a utility player. Lima's natural position was a defensive midfielder, however, it was not uncommon for him to play multiple positions in one game depending on the team's formation. He would often play at both wings on defense, as well as a ponta direita, or right attacking midfielder. He was a part of the greatest Brazilian team ever, the Santos dynasty of the 60s. While on the team, he won 7 Paulistaos, 2 libertadores, and 2 world club championships. For the national team, he was an absolute starter for the 66 team, but unfortunately, that team's chances died away with Pele's injury. Lima was the first player of his kind in Brazil, and to this day, there really hasnt been such a versatile player like him. PAULO VALENTIM Of all the Brazilian players who made their mark in Argentine football, none is remembered more fondly than the great centerforward Paulo Valentim, idol of Boca Juniors. Valentim was a prolific goalscorer who’d already made his mark at Botafogo. When he first arrived in Buenos Aires, Boca Juniors president Alberto J. Armando gave him one piece of advice, in order to help him win over the notoriously demanding Boca Juniors fans: ‘You need to score goals against River. Don’t worry about anything else.’ Valentim took the advice to heart, and between 1960 and 1964 he scored 10 goals against Boca’s archrivals. Eight of those goals came against River’s legendary goalkeeper Amadeo Carrizo. Those 10 goals make Valentim the top scorer for Boca Juniors in the history of the Superclasicos, and, as Armando had predicted, the fans loved him for it. Whenever Valentim played, the crowd would be constantly cheering for the Brazilian throughout the match, with a chant that has now become part of Boca’s lore: “Tim, Tim, Tim…Gol de Valentim!’ But Valentim didn’t limit himself to scoring against River. During his five years at Boca Juniors he played a total of 109 matches and he scored 67 goals, as he helped the club win titles in 1962 and 1964. He was Boca’s leading scorer in four of the five years with the club, most notably in 1961, when he scored 24 goals, and in 1962, when he scored 19. His success in Argentina must not have been a surprise to the fans of Botafogo. Valentim had played 206 matches for Botafogo, and had scored 135 goals for them. In 1957, Valentim helped Botafogo obtain the Carioca title, which had eluded them since 1948. During the decisive match against Fluminense, Valentim scored five goals, as Botafogo won 6-2. The legendary Garrincha scored the other goal. Valentim played for Brazil’s national team at the South American championships of 1959, forming a great attack, alongside Garrincha, Didi, Pele and XXXX. Overall, he played only five matches for Brazil, in which he scored five goals, for an average of one goal per match. Valentim’s coach at Botafogo, Joao Saldanha, once described him as follows: ‘Valentim is a tank, but a tank with intelligence. Not only he runs over the defenders, but he knows how to position himself, how to play with malice, and he never moves too far from the penalty area, as he knows there will always be another rebound coming.’ Valentim was above all a great finisher, a centerforward with a deadly shot and great power. As Boca’s Antonio Rattin once said, ‘We just needed to get the ball near the penalty area, and Valentim would resolve it for us.’ Valentim not only helped Boca Juniors by scoring goals, but he even managed to help the club supernaturally, as the following anecdote shows: In 1962, Boca Juniors and River Plate went into the Superclasico, the next to last game of the season, with the Argentine title on the line. River was ahead by one point, so Boca needed a win in order to move ahead of their rivals. Early in the match, Valentim dribbled past Amadeo Carrizo, and as he was about to score, the veteran goalkeeper grabbed him. It was Valentim himself who took the penalty, and he converted for a 1-0 lead. The match remained that way until three minutes from time, when a penalty was given to River Plate. With the title on the line, XXXX, (also a Brazilian), proceeded to take the penalty. According to Boca’s defender Silvio Marzolini, as all players were nervously awaiting the kick, Valentim chose that moment to make a vow to heaven. He promised that if his fellow Brazilian missed the penalty, Valentim would not only walk in a peregrination from his home to a famous Buenos Aires church, but he would also give the sum of 10,000 pesos (a considerable amount at the time) to the first beggar to cross his path. In one of the most memorable, and controversial, plays in Argentine football history, goalkeeper Antonio Roma stopped the penalty, and Boca went on to win the title. To this day fans of River claim that Roma illegally moved up a step, to which Boca fans respond that the penalty shouldn’t have been called in the first place. The next morning, Valentim set out to fulful his promise. On the way to the church, fans of Boca Juniors were walking with him, mobbing him, as everybody wanted to hug him and celebrate with their hero. But Valentim was looking for something else. As he got near the church, an old lady walked up to him and begged for a coin. Valentim put his hands in his pocket and took out the 10,000 peson and handed them to her. The old lady took the money and ran away. Sadly, like many other great craques, Valentim struggled with alcohol addiction. He died in poverty in Buenos Aires in 1984, at the age of 51. Boca Juniors payed for his burial expenses. As often happens in these cases, the help seems to have been too little, too late, for a man who had brought so much to the club.

Meia-esquerda de muito habilidade, artilheiro, ele foi figura muito importante na Copa do Mundo de 1962, na qual substituiu o Pelé, contundido, participando de quatro jogos e marcando três gols: dois diante da Espanha e um contra a Tchecoslováquia, na final da Copa. Em 1963 foi negociado com o Milan, da Itália, onde também brilhou. Jogou ainda na Fiorentina e na Juventus. Encerrou a carreira no Vasco, em 1972. No Milan, na decisão do Mundial de Clubes contra o Santos em 63, ele integrou o célebre ataque rubro-negro ao lado de Mora, Lodetti, Mazzola e Gianni Rivera. E no Botafogo é "titular" do maior ataque do Glorioso em todos os tempos: Garrincha, Didi, Quarentinha, Amarildo e Zagallo. Considare-se que Amarildo e Garrincha ganharam "sozinhos" a Copa do Chile para o Brasil. Por pouco não jogou futebol. Foi dispensado nos juvenis do Flamengo. Resolveu servir ao exército, até que o jogador Paulistinha o convenceu a fazer teste no Botafogo. Acabou aprovado. No Glorioso fez 238 partidas e 135 gols. With my sixth pick, I select... PAULO CESAR CARPEGGIANI Paulo Cesar Carpeggiani was a talented midfielder with great tactical sense. He was a solid passer, a very effective defender, and a capable dribbler. Paulo Cesar played at Inter of Porto Alegre from 1969 to 1977, and he formed a partnership in midfield with Falcao, which helped make Inter one of the dominant teams of its era. He won seven Gaucho titles with Inter, as well as two Brazilian titles in 1975 and 76. In 1977 he moved to Flamengo for 5.7 millon Cruzeiros, a very significant sum in the Brazilian market. At Flamengo he played alongside stars like Junior and Zico, and won the Carioca championships in 1978 and 79, as well as the Brazilian championship in 1980. For Brazil's national team, he played on 17 occasions, including the World Cup of 1974, where Brazil failed to make it to the final after losing to the memorable Holland squad led by Johan Cryuff. Carpeggiani was forced to retire from football at the age of 31, because of a knee injury. Since then, he's had an extensive and succesful coaching career. Wilson da Silva Piazza DOB: : 25/02/1943 in Ribeirão das Neves (MG) Central defender and volante Height: 1,76cm; Weight: 74kg Piazza made his name as the venerable midfield general for Cruzeiro. He spent 13 years at the club where he won 10 Campeonato Mineiros, and in 1976, along with the veteran Brazilian legend Jairzinho, took the team to Libertadores glory. He was known for his physical strength, defense, passing skills, and even the occasional goal. Just look at that picture! Does he look like a player you want to mess with! On the national team, Piazza made his trade as a central defender and earned the starting central defender role in the 70 team following an injury to the original starter. In 1974, he would also start on the team that would ultimately get a disappointing 4th place. One of his shining moments was in 1966 in the Taca Brasil final, the equivalent of the Brasileirao at the time. In this final, Cruzeiro faced the greatest team in Brazilian history, the Santos dynasty. Cruzeiro was made up of many youngsters, including Piazza who was 23 at the time. In the first leg at the Mineirao, they demolished Pele's Santos team 6-2. They were up 5-0 at the half! In the return game in Sao Paulo, Cruzeiro were losing 2-0 but were able to score 3 consecutive goals, thus winning 3-2. The late 60s were Cruzeiro's glory days, with other superstars like Dirceu Lopes and Tostão. This incredible Cruzeiro dynasty, with Piazza as its constant, would feature other players in the mid-70s, with Jairzinho and Nelinho. Juninho, real name Antônio Augusto Ribeiro Reis Junior, also known as Juninho Pernambucano (born January 30, 1975 in Recife) is a football (soccer) player from Brazil. He plays with Olympique Lyonnais and the Brazilian national team. 1993-1994: Sport Recife 1995-2001: Vasco da Gama 2001-2006: Lyon Juninho played 110 games with Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama, scoring 24 goals. He won the Copa Libertadores with Vasco and, in 2000, won the Brazilian silver Ball trophy. He is especially famous for his accurate, powerful and varied set pieces, having scored 26 free kicks for Olympique Lyonnais. He is amongst the world’s best in this area, recently demonstrated in March 2006, when he scored a freekick from a staggering 38 metres against AC Ajaccio. Drafter: Sempre Pick: 6th Player: Jose Altafini ("Mazzola") Position: forward Bio from wikipedia José João Altafini (born July 24, 1938 in Piracicaba, Brazil) was a Brazilian -born Italian footballer. He is the joint-third highest scorer in Serie A history (along with Giuseppe Meazza) with 216 goals. Club Career Altafini played for a number of Brazilian teams, including Palmeiras, before he began his career in Italy with AC Milan in 1958. He made his debut on September 21, 1958, and, in his first season, he played 32 games and scored 28 goals, winning the title along the way. His first league goal came on October 5 in a win against Bari. Milan won the title again in 1962, when Altafini was the league's joint top scorer with 22 goals in 33 games. In 1965, Altafini joined Napoli, where he stayed until 1972. In 1972, Napoli ironically lost 2-0 in the final of the Coppa Italia to Altafini's previous club, Milan. After his time at Napoli, he joined Juventus and lost another cup final in 1973. He did, however, win two more league titles: in 1973 and 1975. By the time he left Juventus in 1976, Altafini had played 459 games in Serie A and had scored 216 goals, although he had scored most of these in the early part of his career. In fact, he only scored 53 goals in his last 8 seasons in Italy, whereas he had scored 134 in his first 8.
