Where can I find, and what brands of digital cameras could I get value on the cheap for advanced hobbyist photography? Note: I'm looking for something above your basic handgeld.

A pretty subjective question. Cheap and advanced are hardly words that go together.
I've always had Olympus cameras and had good luck.
Guessing I would say you don't need a DSLR, one were you change lenses. There are some excellent high res cameras that have a stablized 10X zooms that produce great results and you have full control over the photo, most of the time the auto (P) feature will do it all for you.
I'd wander through the web to see what you'd like.
Do get one that at least has a grip that fits your hand with the button in a natural position.
Get one with a known lens maker. Oly Canon, Nikon, Sony. and check ebay for digi cams and see what they have.

Don't get caught up in the "How many megapixels do you have" anything from 4 up will give you excellent results that can give you great 8x10 prints.

Up to December I used a 4meg Oly C4000. Got a few shots on an online gallery I can give you the address to if you want.
