I'll be traveling to Liverpool next week for the Arsenal match and was hoping for suggestions as to pubs/restaurants. Best places to do any of the following would be greatly appreciated:

1. Grab breakfast
2. Grab a pint
3. Fish and chips
4. All manner of curry

Well I'd suggest you not wear your Arsenal Shirt. Not that there'd be much danger but... Have breakfast in town. Maybe others can suggest an away pub. Maybe over toward Goodison. I only know the pubs close to Anfield for home supporters.

If you are ingognito then at Anfield go into the Alfred next to the Kop gate. It's as good as any in the area for your purpose. Before you do, cross Walton Breck Road into the Hillsborough Justice Office and read the literature and give them a few pound or so. Walk around to the Anfield Road Stand and visit the memorial to the 96. Now you are ready to have that pint and perhaps you'll understand Liverpool Football club a bit better.

I can't recommend any chippies around Anfield. I cabbed in and out and I seriously suggest you do the same.

No no no. Evening games go like this: go to Dr Duncan's in the city centre (opposite the side of St George's Hall, just a couple of buildings down from the Marriott Hotel) for a couple of pints - either from the range of mad English bitters or the range of seriously strong continental lagers, depending on your fancy. Then walk up from Dr Dunk's, past St George's Hall and the library, under the flyover to the bus stop for the Number 26, which takes you right up to Anfield, with a stop outside the Kop. From there, you can get food in any of the grease merchants that cluster around there - it's pointless suggesting one over the other, they're all horrible. The pints of beer previously consumed will help in this regard, but in any case - you don't go the footie for a gourmet experience.

Then you can go to the Arkles, around the other end of the ground, for the away fans' action - all other Arsenal fans will be in here. Alternatively, the Albert is a good shout as long as you don't mind queuing for a pint, or you could wander a couple of hundred yards up the Breck Road, away from Anfield, to the Sandon, which is a massive old pub full of atmosphere on match days.

And as you're a furriner on a first visit, do as suggested above and give the HSJC a few quid - also, of course, walk around to the Anfield Road end and pay your regards at the memorial.

After the game, the No 27 from outside the Kop takes you back into town. Alternatively (and dependant on where you are staying) walk up away from Anfield again in the direction of the Sandon, about half a mile until you hit the Oakfield pub (you can see the brewery sign in big gold letters from a fair distance away). They usually do a lock-in - particularly if Liverpool have won. Good to get a couple away whilst you wait for the throng to die down, you won't get a taxi straight away in any case.

Mention as many times as possible that your an American and its your first time, you will get loads of free beer and the intracasies of the game explained to you, usualy with the words fooking yanks included in every other sentence, this is an endearing term and always comes with a pint.

Too bad you're going on an away trip. Not that going on an away trip isn't one of the great experiences of following a football club, but Anfield's a place worth going to as a neutral/home supporter.

I went in the Kop once in school (read: I had a Scouser girlfriend and wanted to sleep with her) with a Liverbird scarf and it was one of my greatest experiences as a football fan.

Went to Highbury twice last year, so I thought an away match would be best for this year. Originally was planning on Tottenham away, but a good friend of mine is a Liverpool supporter and has never been (to Anfield, to Europe). He's also about to have a kid, so it's a last hurrah of sorts.

I'm still excited to see Anfield - if you love football, this has to go down as one of the great stadiums.
