Amoah enjoying second chance
Amoah enjoying second chance
Two years ago, if you had asked a Ghanaian football fan about Matthew Amoah they most likely would have been puzzled. The 25-year-old has a strange relationship with the supporters back home despite playing an important role in helping the team to qualify for their first FIFA World Cup™ finals.
Amoah scored four times in the qualifiers for Germany 2006 but remains an unsung hero in Ghana. Not even his flurry of goals seemingly every other weekend in the Dutch league with Vitesse Arnhem earned him star status with Ghanaian fans. This oddity is largely due to the fact that the striker did not play for long in Ghana, leaving after an agent spotted him playing for amateur side Ambassadors of Tema....

Re: Amoah enjoying second chance
Always rated him as a player in the Eridivisie (god I miss the weekly Eridivisie games on FSC!!!), but how he translates as a Bundesliga player I've always wondered. I think it's an easier transition rather than jumping straight to Italy or England, but I think he's a player to hang onto in the end. He scored the lone goal against a tough side Senegal, so his performances aren't slowing down for his country.
His immediate success with Dortmund I guess hinges upon the formations BvM puts out there. As a lone striker I don't think he'll thrive as his size could come into question. But partnered with Ebi or anyone else, I think he'll do quite well. Can't wait to see him fully for Dortmund and I hope he doesn't leave it ALL out on the field in Egypt. We'll need some of it when he returns!

At least we know that Van Marwijk is quite familiar with his skills and abilities, as opposed to having signed someone based on video footage or the occasional match attendance. I think Bert is smart enough to know where to play Amoah, and how to help take the pressure off Smolarek at the same time.
Wonderful to hear of him scoring the winner over in Egypt, especially as his contribution to the Nigerian game didn't augur especially well. To be honest, I think I'd rather get him back later and in form than see Ghana get tossed out in the first phase.

I have mixed feelings about that. In the end I am with you and wish him all the best with his national side. Maybe it will also boost his morale and BL performances when he has been successful in Egypt.

Well, Ghana are out. Lost to Zimbabwe 2-1.
It's too bad it's not time enough for Amoah to play a real role in the Ruhr Derby this weekend.
Or is it??

Re: Amoah enjoying second chance
He'd only have 4 days rest PLUS a longer than usual plane ride to Dortmund PLUS not being in any of the training sessions. Talent and all, would we want him starting for us?
If he does make the trip hopefully he'll be on as a sub...
Still, can't wait to see his full debut for Dortmund!
