I had 24 million Quid to start with.
Went and bought Kompony, Donovan, and some other fill in players plus a good number of youth players.

Donovan and DMB were pretty highly rated in FM05. I had both on my team at various clubs. Not top quality but good squad players at a club like Arsenal. Haven't looked at them yet in FM06 though.

Re: Football Manager/Worldwide Soccer Manager 2006 Fans
As I've said elsewhere, I usually play LLM, but decided to play an Arsenal game precisely to see how the finances went as we moved into the new stadium. My transfer budget has generally been in the 13-15 mil range, but then sometime in August the board usually makes extra transfer funds available. When my contract comes up for renewal I usually take the option with the highest transfer budget, as I'm always way below the wage limit they set.
I bought Mahamadou Diarra right out of the gate, and he's been solid but unspectacular. Tried like hell to get Kompany and DeJong from the beginning, but lost out to Liverpool on Kompany, and after a couple years finally got Ajax to agree to an exorbitant fee for DeJong, but he refused to come. I did have Donovan for a year or so, and he had a knack for scoring key goals. Sold him for a tidy profit to Everton or somebody like that. I bought Marouane Chamakh as a target type guy, and he's kept pace with Henry, both of them scoring about 35 to 40 goals a year. I'm now in April 2010. I've won the League Cup twice, the FA Cup twice, the League twice, and finally won the CL last year -- just got roundly bounced out by B Munich this year. I'm currently 3 points out of first with a game in hand -- I've got the best attack and best defence in the league, but every time I'm about to overtake Chelsea and 'Pool I'll lose to somebody like Lincoln (who just came up this year).
One of my beefs about the CM/FM series is that fatigue is unrealistic -- nobody can play 2 full matches a week except keepers and defenders without dipping into the 80s at kickoff for the second match -- so I've gone for depth rather than huge splashy signings. My current lineup looks something like this:
Chamakh----Henry
Reyes/Ben Arfa------Hleb/Cesc-----Barreto/Govou
Mascherano/Diarra
Evra----Senderos (c)----Kolo----VandenBorre
Frey (with Akinfeev now pushing him hard)
On the bench I've got RvP, S. Kalou, Hubschmann, Clichy, Tevez, and a bunch of squad players. Tevez I bought as a replacement for Henry, but TH14 shows no signs of slowing down -- at 33 (I think) he's still scoring tons of goals (though he's kind of streaky now, and disappears for long periods), and all my coaches assure me that he has his best years ahead of him. Bendtner developed very nicely, but just as he was breaking into the first team he got pissy about playing time, and I got Everton to pay well above his value. We just played them in the league, and VandenBorre broke his (Bendtner's) leg. I keep saying I'm going to resign at the end of the season and take a job with a lower club, but I just can't tear myself away yet.
