K-town lodging??
Is there anyplace to stay in this town?? I can't find a damn thing for less than $57/night, and Heidelberg and Saarbrucken are even worse.

LOL!! Dude... just thank God the game isn't in Munich or some other larger city (Frankfurt, Berlin)... try $150 a night MINIMUM. Germany will be milking the shite out of this cup. The rumors we not false.
Let me know what hotel you find in Kaiserslautern. I am in the same boat.
Heidelberg is a major tourist town... university town as well... so prices will be steep. Mannheim I cannot speak on or Saarbrucken. Karlsruhe may be too far south, as definitely is the case with Baden-Baden, although the spa's there are calling my name after a 9 hour flight!!!
Best of luck.

Re: K-town lodging??
Well, the thing is that I'm talking even youth hostels. I just want to get to the games, I don't care how much of a craphole I have to stay in...I'm actually thinking of spending a couple nights in Berlin between 2 of the games (I'll probably be getting the unlimited-use rail pass so it won't cost anything) and found a place to stay there for about $25/night.

Gotcha. I don't qualify for some of those since I am of older stature. And, not sure the wife would really go for that sort of thing.
See if you Rail pass will cover some overnight trains and bed down in those on occasion.

Re: K-town lodging??
Try pension blum. We got a double with Breakfast on the night of the 17th for 70 Euro...I don't know what a single goes for, but I'd assume two twins in one room would be 35 Euro. It's like 100 meters from the Hbf and a 10 minute walk to the stadium. Can't beat the location!
Stefan Wilding is the manager...inquire at
Pensionblum1@aol.com
Also, go to the Ktown website ( www.kaiserslautern.de) and check out the tourism section and go to hotels and lodging...it lists everything available. I e-mailed a bunch of them and Pension Blum was one of the few with availability as of last week.
Great freaking location. Good luck!

Try camping. It's in the middle of the woods.

Think about staying somewhere else and taking the train in - it will likely be cheaper and then you can hang with the rest of us!

Re: K-town lodging??
I wonder if we can figure out a way for US military families in K-town to host some US travellers?
Otherwise, $57 a night seems kind of reasonable to me. I once went to Frankfurt at the last minute and had to spend about 80 Euro a night (after haggling with the front desk manager) for a flea bag place right next to the methodone clinic. Their regular rates were 35-50 Euro a night, but there was some second tier convention at the Messe, so there was no lodging to be found anywhere. You don't even want to think about Frankfurt hotel prices during the WC game days, or maybe even in between.
When we first moved to Frankfurt area there was the Book Fair, a big publishing show, in progress. At first we were told the only available hotel room was 100 kilometres away. This was a month or two in advance. Our admin support finally found us a suite in a little out of the way hotel about 2/3 of the way to Wiesbaden. There was some strange German Buddhist meeting going on at the hotel and lots of folks wandering around in robes with shaved heads. But the restaurant was quite good.

Looking into it. Found reasonable airfare from ORD. Where are you flying into Doogie?
