MLS Offseason is starting up quickly

    * All teams have to submit the protected player lists today for the expansion draft

    * KC traded Ryan Smith to Chivas for two picks (1st and 3rd) in the Suuplemental draft

    * Portland has cut a deal with Montreal in which Montreal will not pick any Portland players in the expansion draft

Not a first. It likely is part of a trade that will be announced on Wednesday.

In 2006, Dallas traded Ronnie O'Brien to TOR, part of the deal was TOR had to pass on DAL players in the expansion draft.

From what I read it is a combination of a loan deal they did this past summer and Portland giving Montreal its allocation slot for one year.

Did the Revs get a pick for trading Fred's rights? Was that this year or next?

What are the other teams up to? The Offseason Version

Interesting to note that Nicol apparently rejected an interview request by the Rapids.

Seth Sinovic is on his way back to KC in a swap for Davy Arnoud. SKC also gets some allocation money from Montreal. Good deal for both teams.

Interesting move. KC must be pretty high on him....or wanted to get rid Arnoud's 250k contract....probably both

Donovan Ricketts to Montreal for an allocation. Great move by Marsch, they're building what looks to be a very solid defense for year one.

that answers their keeper question. Guess they were not confident in Gaudette

Also might have something to do with the Revs protecting both Keepers?

    Confused.

Revs protected both keepers in the hope they'd be able to make a trade? If so, good idea, bad execution so far.

I believe he's saying that the Revs protected both keepers because they thought that Montreal still had interest in acquiring another goalie. Had they left either Reis or Shuttleworth unprotected, there's a good chance they may have been chosen.

I wouldn't exactly be crying myself to sleep at night if Shuttleworth got selected. I'm really concerned that by protecting him Heaps and Burns consider him to be Matt Reis' successor, which would continue the trend of replacing important players with mediocre ones from the draft.

Probably not, though the Impact do have Preston Burpo as the GK coach so I guess there's an outside shot he has man-love for Shuttleworth. Yet Montreal has Evan Bush, so why bother with Shuttleworth? And we now know that the Impact was looking for a better class of keeper, like Ricketts.

So the Revs may have protected two keepers because the team didn't really have 11 players worth protecting. The alternate theory is they may be trying to work a deal with a team that kept no keepers.

As for Montreal, it's acquired Ricketts, Arnaud, Bryan Arguez, Justin Braun, Gerson Mayen and Tyson Wahl in the wake of the draft. That's a good haul for two business days of work.

OK, gotcha. But, I kind of agree with this:

Losing Shuttleworth might have been addition by subtraction. Hasn't he been with the league long enough to have a guaranteed or quasi-guaranteed contract?

Are teams required to protect the full 11? I really think I'd have stopped after Reis, Fagundez, SJ, Soares and Benny. Maybe Alston. And I still bet the REVs wouldn't have lost a player. [Edit - I probably would have protected Carglio too but now I know that wasn't in the cards]

Yeah that Whalers job has been open for years now. ;)

I’m not surprised Nicol turned down Colorado. Why uproot your family to work in another situation where the team owner can’t be bothered to pay much attention and installed corporate lackeys instead of soccer people to run his…er, soccer team?

Montreal picked up a pretty good keeper today, Donovan Ricketts.
