GNK Dinamo Zagreb, commonly referred to as Dinamo Zagreb (Croatian pronunciation: [dinamɔ ˈzâːɡrɛb]), or by their nickname The Blues (Croatian: Modri) are a Croatian football club based in Zagreb. They play their home matches at Stadion Maksimir. They are the most successful club in Croatian football, having won twelve Croatian championship titles, ten Croatian Cups and four Croatian Supercups. The club has spent its entire existence in top flight, having been members of the Yugoslav First League from 1946 to 1991, and then the Prva HNL since its foundation in 1992.
Dinamo Zagreb were founded on 9 June 1945 in order to replace the three very popular Zagreb football clubs (HAŠK, Građanski and Concordia) which had been disbanded by the Yugoslav Communist Party following the end of World War II. Dinamo then entered the Yugoslav First League in its inaugural 1946–47 season, finishing as runners-up. In their second season in Yugoslav top flight in 1947–48 they finished as Yugoslav champions which was their first major trophy. The club won three more league titles and seven Yugoslav Cups before they left the Yugoslav league in 1991 amid the breakup of Yugoslavia and formation of the Croatian football league system. Dinamo are the only Croatian football club who have ever won European silverware, having won the 1966–67 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup by defeating Leeds United in the final. They have also finished runners-up in the same competition in 1963 when they lost to Valencia.
Amid political turmoil in the early 1990s the began club claiming direct lineage to pre-WWII clubs Građanski Zagreb and HAŠK. In order to reflect this in June 1991 it was renamed HAŠK Građanski and in February 1993 it was renamed again and became Croatia Zagreb. In February 2000 it reverted back to Dinamo. In 2011 club management increasingly began claiming that Dinamo is the direct descendant of Građanski (which had been founded in 1911) and in April that year decided to append the adjective "Građanski" to the club's official name, turning it into the present-day GNK Dinamo Zagreb (Građanski nogometni klub Dinamo Zagreb or Dinamo Zagreb Citizens' Football Club) and announced a grand celebration of the club's centennial.
The team's traditional colour is royal blue, which has been replaced for European matches in recent times with the darker navy blue. The club's biggest rivals are Hajduk Split, and matches between the two teams are referred to as "Eternal derby". Dinamo are currently the reigning Croatian champions having won their sixth consecutive Prva HNL title in the 2010–2011 season. The club is currently managed by Krunoslav Jurčić.

List of GNK Dinamo Zagreb managers:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_GNK_Dinamo_Zagreb_managers

The following table lists managers according to trophies won. In seasons when several managers had spells with the club only the manager who was in charge when the title was won is listed. The most successful manager to date was Miroslav Blažević who had four spells with the club (1980–83, 1986–88, 1992–94, 2002–03) and is the only manager to have won all the domestic honours available to Dinamo in both the Yugoslav and Croatian football league systems, leading Dinamo to a total of 6 trophies.
Ivica Horvat is the only manager who won European silverware with Dinamo, leading them to triumph in the 1967 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup Final, although he was in charge only for the final tie against Leeds United as Branko Zebec, who was in charge throughout the 1966–67 season, had left the club in the summer of 1967. Dinamo's only other European final came five years earlier in the 1962–63 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, when they were led by Milan Antolković.
Krunoslav Jurčić is the only manager to date to have won two consecutive national titles with Dinamo, winning the 2008–09 and 2009–10 Croatian championships.

    1967 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup Final:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1967_Inter-Cities_Fairs_Cup_Final

Three Yugoslav clubs went on to participate in the 1966–67 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, but they were knocked–out early in the competition, excluding Dinamo who went on to become the first ever Yugoslavian team that won a European competition. In the first round Dinamo played against Spartak Brno and after the aggregate score was 2–2, coin was flipped in order to determine the winner. Dinamo was through to the second round, where they were drawn against Scottish side Dunfermline. For the first time in the history of the cup the away goals rule were introduced, which helped Dinamo to qualify for the third round after the aggregate score was 4–4 (2–0 at home and 2–4 away). On their road to finals they defeated Romanian side Dinamo Piteşti, Italian powerhouse Juventus and German side Eintracht Frankfurt. In the finals the club was draw to play its first match at Maksimir against Leeds United. Dinamo won 2–0 in front of the 33 thousand fans with Marijan Čerček and Krasnodar Rora scoring, which was enough to secure the title as the match at Elland Road finished 0–0.

    Post–European success era (1967–2000):

Dinamo closed the successful sixties with Yugoslav Cup title in the 1969 and quarterfinals of the 1969–70 Cup Winners' Cup competition. Unfortunately, the success didn't follow the club to the new decade, as they failed to win a single trophy throughout the 1970s. The club participated in three more seasons of Inter-Cities Fairs Cup before it was replaced with UEFA Cup, but failed to make any impact. Dinamo took part of the initial UEFA Cup season, but lost in the second round of the competition to Rapid Vienna on away goals rule. The club entered the UEFA Cup on seven more occasions (in 1976, 1977, 1979, 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1992) but never repeated success from the sixties. Finally, at the start of the 1980s, Dinamo won their sixth Yugoslav Cup title, defeating Red Star Belgrade 2–1 on aggregate result. They qualified for the 1980–81 Cup Winners' Cup, but lost already in first round to Benfica. In 1982 Dinamo sealed their fourth Yugoslav championship. In 1983 they won their seventh Yugoslav Cup which was the club's last trophy in the SFR Yugoslavia. After Benfica, another Portuguese club sealed Dinamo's European season, this time in 1982–83 European Cup when they lost to Sporting CP. They played in 1983–84 Cup Winners' Cup season and were eliminated, again, by Portuguese side Porto. The club didn't have any success in the second part of the 1980s, except two consecutive second–places in Yugoslavian championship in 1989 and 1990.

    1990s Croatia Zagreb Era:

After the SFR Yugoslavia was dissolved, Dinamo took part in creating the Croatian Football League and the initial season was played in 1992. The same year club controversially changed its name to HAŠK Građanski, and another name change followed in 1993, when the club was renamed to Croatia Zagreb. The name change was widely seen as a political move by the leadership of then newly independent Croatia, with the goal of distancing the entire country from its Communist past. As the name change was also never accepted by their supporters, the club renamed themselves back to Dinamo on 14 February 2000. As Croatia Zagreb, the club has won six Croatian championships, of which five were won in a row from 1996 to 2000. They've also won four Croatian Cup titles.
In the late 1990s, the club played two consecutive seasons in the UEFA Champions League group stage. In the 1998–99 season, they were drawn in a group with Ajax, Olympiacos and Porto. After disappointing performances in the first three matches in which they managed to draw against Ajax at home and lost their away matches against Olympiacos and Porto, they performed well in the remaining three matches, beating Porto at home and Ajax away, and drawing to Olympiacos away. However, they failed to advance to the quarterfinals with as a second–placed team. In the 1999–2000 season, they were drawn in a group with defending champions Manchester United, Marseille and Sturm Graz, but managed only a fourth–place finish in the group with two draws and one win. They most notably held Manchester United to a goalless draw at Old Trafford in their opening Champions League match that season. The club also competed in two consecutive seasons of UEFA Cup. In 1996 they were knocked–out in the second round, while in the 1998 they managed to reach the third round, but lost to Atlético Madrid 2–1 on aggregate score.

    Recent years (2000–present):

History of GNK Dinamo Zagreb (2000–present):
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_GNK_Dinamo_Zagreb_(2000–present)

The club subsequently participated five times in the third qualifying round of the Champions League, in 2000, 2003, 2006, 2007 and 2008. However, they played against Milan, Dynamo Kyiv, Arsenal, Werder Bremen, Shakhtar Donetsk and failed to win a single match, losing 6–1 on aggregate to Milan, 5–1 on aggregate to Dynamo Kiev, Shakhtar Donetsk and Arsenal and 5–3 on aggregate to Werder Bremen. Since the qualifying rounds format changed, Dinamo was unable to get through to the play–off round, losing 3–2 on aggregate to FC Red Bull Salzburg in 2009. Before the UEFA Cup group stage phase was introduced, Dinamo's best success in the competition was reaching the second round of the competition on three occasions. They were able to reach the group stages in 2004–05, 2007–08 and 2008–09, but failed to secure qualification to round of 32. UEFA then introduced Europa League competition which had slightly changed format compared to that of the UEFA Cup. Dinamo was able to qualify for the group stage of the initial 2009–10 Europa League season, after beating Scottish side Hearts 4–2 on aggregate. In domestic competitions the club was able to secure five league titles and won the Croatian Cup on six occasions. They have also won four Croatian Supercups. The club has also produced many footballing talents that represented Croatia on the international level in the 2000s. The most notable are Luka Modrić, Eduardo, Vedran Ćorluka, Niko Kranjčar and Tomislav Butina. Dinamo once again qualified for the Europa League in 2010–2011 finishing third in group D behind PAOK Thessaloniki and Villarreal C.F. and ahead of Club Brugge K.V.. Dinamo was very close to finishing second after wins against Villarreal at home (2–0) and Club Brugge K.V. away (0–2) but failed to win in their last game against PAOK at home (lost 0–1) and thus failed to qualify for the next stage. Dinamo are due to play against Malmö FF from Sweden UEFA Champions League 2011-12 Champions Play-off round after defeating Neftchi Baku PFC from Azerbaijan 3–0 on aggregate (won 3–0 in Zagreb, 0–0 in Baku) and HJK Helsinki from Finland 3-1 on aggregate (1-2 in Helsinki, 1-0 in Zagreb).

Eternal Derby (Croatian: Vječni derbi) also known as the Croatian Derby, (Croatian: Hrvatski derbi) is the name given to matches between the two biggest and most popular Croatian football clubs Dinamo Zagreb and Hajduk Split.
The rivalry can be traced back to 1920s when Zagreb's Građanski and Hajduk often clashed in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia championships. After World War II, Građanski was disbanded by the authorities, and Dinamo Zagreb was formed to take its place, retaining its colours. The two clubs soon became part of the "Big Four" of Yugoslav football (the other two being Crvena Zvezda and Partizan from Serbia) ever since the Yugoslav championship was established in 1946 (both clubs spent their entire existence playing top-flight football). This lasted until 1991, when Croatia declared independence so clubs started competing in the Prva HNL, which saw its first season being played in 1992. Since 1992 Dinamo and Hajduk won 18 out of 19 Croatian championship titles, as well as 15 out of 19 Croatian Cups, which makes them by far the most successful and popular clubs in Croatia.
Due to various formats that were used in the Croatian championship (which currently employs a three-round robin format) and the cup competition format (which has teams playing two-legged fixtures even in the final game) and in addition to the games played in the Supercup, there can be anywhere from three to six derbies per season. As of March 2011, there have been 81 derbies played in total since the establishment of the Croatian championship in 1992, with Dinamo winning 34 and Hajduk 28 games, while 19 matches ended in a draw.

Malmö hoping for first group stage appearance. Malmö FF are competing in Europe for the first time since 2005/06 while NK Dinamo Zagreb are hoping to emulate their group stage appearance of 12 years ago.

It is 12 years since NK Dinamo Zagreb last graced the UEFA Champions League group stage but they will hope to put that right against a Malmö FF side competing in Europe for the first time since 2005/06.

    Previous meetings
    • The teams are meeting for the first time in UEFA competition.

    • Dinamo's only previous experience of Swedish opposition came in the first round of the 2004/05 UEFA Cup, where they eliminated IF Elfsborg, winning 2-0 at home and drawing 0-0 away.

    • Malmö came up against Dinamo's arch-rivals HNK Hajduk Split in their only past matches against Croatian opposition, bowing out to them in the 1997/98 and 1998/99 UEFA Cup second qualifying rounds. They lost three of those individual games – including both their home fixtures – and drew the other.

    Match background
    • Unbeaten in four European games this season (three wins and a draw), Krunoslav Jurčić's Dinamo have lost only one of their last eight continental fixtures at the Maksimir Stadium, going down 1-0 to PAOK FC in last season's UEFA Europa League group stage.

    • Malmö have lost just one of their last five European away games, 3-0 at FC Thun in the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round.

    • Malmö have won only one of their last four European games at home, beating HB Tórshavn 2-0 in this season's second qualifying round.

    • Dinamo have won three and lost only two of their last seven European fixtures on the road, at Villarreal CF and PAOK FC in last season's UEFA Europa League group stage.

    • Twelve years after last gracing the UEFA Champions League group stage, Dinamo have their sights set on a return to Europe's elite following aggregate victories against Neftçi PFK (3-0) and HJK Helsinki (3-1).

    • Dinamo participated in the 1998/99 group stage and while they finished second behind Olympiacos FC, their record was not good enough to reach the quarter-finals as one of the two best runners-up.

    • The following season Dinamo finished bottom of a first group stage pool which included Manchester United FC, Olympique de Marseille and SK Sturm Graz.

    • Since their last group stage appearance, the Croatian club have fallen at the last on five occasions, losing third qualifying round ties to AC Milan in 2000/01, FC Dynamo Kyiv (2003/04), Arsenal FC (2006/07), SV Werder Bremen (2007/08) and FC Shakhtar Donetsk (2008/09).

    • In 2010/11, Dinamo failed to make it out of the UEFA Europa League group stage.

    • Malmö have never played in the group stage of a UEFA competition but reached the 1978/79 European Champion Clubs' Cup final under Bob Houghton, losing 1-0 to Nottingham Forest FC in Munich.

    • This is only their second appearance in qualifying since the advent of the UEFA Champions League. They beat Maccabi Haifa FC (agg: 5-4) to reach the final hurdle in 2005/06, but lost 4-0 on aggregate to Switzerland's FC Thun.

    • They have come through two rounds to reach the play-offs this season, beating HB Tórshavn (agg: 3-1) and, rather more impressively, Scottish champions Rangers FC (agg: 2-1).

    Team ties
    • Dinamo were linked with Malmö defender Ricardinho before the start of the season, but the deal was never completed.

    • Dinamo's Swedish defender Walid Atta played under Malmö coach Rikard Norling at AIK Solna, and was a team-mate of goalkeeper Johan Dahlin in the Sweden Under-21 side.

    • Malmö striker-turned-footballing superstar Zlatan Ibrahimović has a cult following in Croatia by virtue of his Croatian mother, Jurka Gravić.

Hello, nobody likes Zdravko Mamic and his management staff:rolleyes: To much of nepotism and bad business in that system.

I thought that Dinamo will have problems after 1-1, but they came out quickly.:p
    Are you Croatian?:)

This result is a good thing for all Croatian clubs, because they will have better rating at UEFA points. To bad that other Croatian clubs couldn't enter in Europa Liga (Varazdin, Hajduk, RNK Split).

Mateo Kovacic or "Croatian Messi" played very good against Osijek, he is only 16, 17 years old. He will have a nice future. some other players scored in their national championships (Ivan Klasnic, Ivica Olic, Eduardo da Silva, Mate Jajalo for Koln, Ivo Ilicevic also). Ivica Olic won't play against Malta and Israel in upcoming qualification matches. He is again injured.:(

I read that kovacic got a standing ovation from the Osijek fans when he was subbed off. I've seen mateo play a couple of times and he has excellent technique and footballing brain. Only thing he needs to do is get stronger and improve his stamina. Kid has a very bright future.

Dinamo absolutely destroyed Malmo. I was a little worried after they gave up that goal nut it didn't stop then at all. I wish our national team played like dinamo. Fast free flowing football.

That I haven't heard. But he would be excellent player in the future.
No need for regional league, we have our own talents, just we need to invest in them, their development and Croatian national team will have again great results, as before.:)
What is your opinion about regional football league (Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Slovenia).

Croatia is in regional league of basketball, waterpolo and in 2,3 weeks handball is starting.

We don't have much progress in basketball, we lost reputation from before.
We are strong in waterpolo and handball without other clubs.

Tonight is the second leg match: Malmo Dinamo Zagreb, around 8.30 PM, European time.

Hajduk won 4-0 in Croatian Championship.

    Problems in the Blue Hell

The match Dinamo Zagreb against Malmo FF finished with surprising defeat of 2-0. Match was terrible to watch, dramatic, with some opportunities for Dinamo Zagreb, to much optimism, players of Dinamo and his management were sure that they will pass. But problems started when player of Dinamo Sime Vrsaljko got red card. He saw his companion on the ground, was mad because players of Malmo FF didn't hit the ball outside, so that he can receive medical help and he wnt on opponents leg very offensive, he almost putted on the ground coach of Malmo, in one start two missions accomplished.:p Croatian mentality almost ruined everything, easy approach, to much defensive.

Also there was a scandal of Serbian fans who entered as "Malmo fans". They yelled "Ubij, ubij Dinamo" - "Kill, kill Dinamo" They left from Serbia, but Serbia didn't left from them. They don't leave Croats alone thousand kilometers from Croatia. They must use silly provocations and they just pretended to be the fans of Malmo. That's animal and barbaric behavior. Serbian tribe represented themselves as they usually know.:D Savages.

    Squad of Malmo: Malmö:
Melicharek, Vinzents, Halsti, Larsson, Figueiredo, Hamad, Jansson, Pekalski, Ricardinho, Durmaz, Mehmeti.

    Squad of Dinamo:
Kelava, Vrsaljko, Tonel, Vida, Cufre, Calello, Leko, Badelj, Sammir, Beqiraj, Rukavina.

Player of the match is goalkeeper of Dinamo -Ivan Kelava.

Did not see the game but I read that rukavina had 3 great chances to score. What a stupid play by vrsaljko. With that stupid redcard he nearly cost dinamo champions league. Kelava really saved dinamo with some big saves. Well it seems us Croatians always make things difficult when in reality dinamo has much more quality then Malmo. Well finally at least we will get to see a croatian club in the champions league.

Rukavina had 3 chances, he was all alone, goal was empty and he managed to punch a ball in the leg of Malmo player. He had choices; right, or left.
Vrsaljko played ok, but in the first 20, 30 minutes, later he became average, impulsive, angry. It's hard do play with one player less almost 40 minutes.

Malmo got wings. And Dinamo entered in the role of drama queens.:D Like always, black out, no connection between defense and midfield, lack of discipline, Croatian mentality came out, they started in defensive style, wandering around, watching how Malmo is getting closer. Dinamo couldnt keep the ball like 20 last minutes, just pure punches, without precision, tried to get some outs, corners, but almost nothing.

Rukavina has problems in his head for a long time. That's why Panathinakos told him to leave. With his head i the clouds Dinamo can't go further. Sammir had some nice forward moves, but nothing. Mateo Kovacic did some important tactical errors, he lost few balls, he was also alone, only one player to pass and he dribbles him, he needed to run and defensive player would made a foul, it would be 11 meters.

Kelava did some extraordinary parades. I don't know why Bilic forces Subasic or Runje. Pletikosa and Kelava are the best goalkeepers for now.

Subasic had family problems, father of his girlfriend tried to kill him with knife because Subasic is of Serbian ethnicity. He couldn't accept that his daughter is dating with Serbian man.

I knew that this will happen, media told: Dinamo is Croatian Barcelona, great style of playing, talented players, Malmo isn't so bad after all, they sacrifice a lot. Their fans were great.

You can watch UEFA Super Cup between Barcelona and Porto tomorrow.:)
In Friday we will have draws for the groups in Champions League.

Dinamo Zagreb is in the fourth pot. Worse pot.
Worse group that Dinamo can get is: Barcelona, Milan, Manchester City. Ideal group is: Porto, Ajax, Marseille. Hard to tell what is great.:D

If Dinamo gets third place that would be a miracle. After 12 years Champions League for Dinamo. To bad that Croatia don't have more clubs in European competitions. We could got extra points and maybe some day we could get direct member of Champions League. These qualifications suck, Dinamo neded to pay against three opponents, travel very far, unknown clubs.

Dinamo managed to reach the group stage of the Champions League in 2011 after beating Neftçi PFC Baku (3-0 at home, 0-0 away), HJK Helsinki (2-1 away, 1-0 at home) and Malmö FF (4-1 at home, lost 2-0 away).

Turbulent summer for Dinamo, hope to see better autmn.:)
