Send him out on loan. Hate to send him away for a nominal fee only to see him bag a bunch of goals.

Agreed, send him on loan for the rest of the year or so. You never know when we will need to call on him again.

I think I have to agree with the consensus, loan him. I would hate to see him go completely, you just gotta love a guy that's as big and strong as Neil, that can score goals. His goal vs arse made him one of my favorites! That being said though I understand that the guy doesn't want to sit on the bench, and with the arrival of El MORO his only chance of playing is if Baro's gets hurt and that's not even guaranteed 'Coz Rafa has been favoring Pongo as of late. I really just hate it when players leave after you get attached to them, I'm still not quite over Owen!!!! THE B**TARD!!!!!!!!

We have been short on strikers all season. Now that we bought Morientes you don't think we will need Mellor at all? With the amount of games we still have to play it would be stupid to only have 3 strikers in the side. Letting Mellor leave does us no good, and I bet he will play a role again this season.

What if Baros or Pongolle gets hurt. Who starts up front in the champions league? Rafa has talked a lot about having a large squad with everyone competing for their place. I can't see him letting Mellor go, leaving us with just 3 strikers.

I never considered that point but I guess it makes sense. I think people way under-value Mellor. Simply because he does not have a great burst and an ability to wow people does not make him a bad striker. If you watch him during a game (especially in a 4-5-1) he is very good at clearing defenders out of the way to give players like Gerrard open shots at goal. The best example is in the Arsenal game (the first goal by Alonso). He is able to bring the defender out and clear space for the midfield to penetrate. I think Mellor brings good things to the table for Liverpool, even if it's not pretty to watch.

Perhaps Rafa has another striking option up his sleeve, or am I being too optimistic?

Mellor and FSP are young support strikers. Every club needs players of that type. The adage that a serious contender needs four competent strikers to be able to meet the demands of a season fought on several fronts holds true. Morientes is not eligible for this season's Champions' League, which means only Baros, FSP and Mellor can take that on. Fine - we may only be talking about two games here, but that's hardly the point at this stage.

Additionally, the FA Cup is about to take over from the League Cup as a serious competition for the second string - one in which significant faith will be invested in the youngsters to advance us deep into the competition. Mellor is clearly an important figure in that sense.

In the summer there will be time to assess our striker situation and to be honest it is likely that Mellor is likely to lose out in a squad containing Morientes, Baros, a fit-again Cisse and Florent Sinama-Pongolle. But for now, he must stay.

Sell Mellor he will never be a regular first teamer at Liverpool or in the prem.
Face it he is not good enough. His abilities are limited. Sell him now and take a mil if you can get it.

On what basis is he not good enough? Not his 5 goals in 11 games, presumably?

Or, to ask a further act of non-linear thinking of you, are Djimi Traore and Igor Biscan "good enough" to be squad members?
