Uruguayan referee Carlos Raul De Leon Acosta was killed while refereeing a match between two clubs from Las Piedras in Uruguay this weekend.

The 40-year-old ref was attacked by a group of 'ultras' who stormed onto the pitch after Acosta had sent off a player.

One attacker used an iron bar and struck a fatal blow on the nape of Acosta's neck.

Although the crowd scattered the assailant has been identified to the police.

This incident is just one of a number of violent scenes seen in Uruguayan football recently, but this raises the safety concerns to a new level.
