ive seen streamers being thrown multiple games. i dont know why all of a sudden it's not allowed, but even still, it's bullshit. it's just paper ffs
Streamers have always been on the banned list, as is anything thrown onto the field of play (even items that are allowed into the park). Again, this is an MLS-wide rule.
Before I followed MLS (pre-Union) I saw that on a couple of games and thought it was totally stupid. Of course, that was an absolute extreme. Some streamers should be fine (if not for the ban imposed by the stadium). But not enough to cover the field/players.
I sit in 101 and I loved that fact the people knew our section as the streamer section. It was such a great atmosphere after goals. With all this talk of "family friendly" these days, the streamers were really one thing that the kids, families, and the more irreverant supporters could have some fun with. The problem was that people started throwing full rolls of streamers from higher up in the stands. Full rolls can travel a far distance. A few of the rolls made their way over the first row and onto the concrete area surrounding the field. That's a no-no. I was told we'd probably not have a problem with them as long as they didn't get out of control or hit the field. Well, against Colorado, they got a bit out of control and almost hit the field. Streamers are clearly prohibited in the stadium guide primarily for the reason described before... they don't want them to interfere with play. The only way to regulate that, is to technically not allow them at all and enforce as necessary. They were not enforcing before, and unfortunately now, they feel its necessary to enforce that policy. I do agree that the manner in which people are being removed from the stadium is a bit rediculous. And to remove someone without first warning them or advising them of stadium policy isn't fair in my opinion. That being said... confetti is technically allowed per the stadium guide and I will be chopping all of my streamers up into tiny pieces. I just need to find the most efficient means of transport and subsequent delivery after a Union goal
now we just need to get a confetti cannon that can fire the little paper shrapnel at 25000 PSI and aim that shit at the players
Saw the post and thought I would add a first-hand perspective, seeing as though it was our guys who got booted. Fact: Streamers are fun to throw. Fact: Streamers are funner to throw after Union goals. Fact: From what I could tell, Mighty Section 101 was supportive of the streamer throwing. Fact: Streamers are not allowed, as per team/MLS rules. Fact: We understand why streamers are not allowed. Fact: Still, streamers are fun to trow after Union goals. Fact: Our guys got booted for throwing streamers during the last home game. Fact: Nobody from the team or security ever said anything to us about not throwing streamers or warning us that we could get kicked out for celebrating that way when we played DCU or when we played Dallas or when we played the Sounders or when we played the Earthquakes or when we played Celtic or when we played Toronto or when we played Man United or when we played New England or when we played the Crew or when we played RSL, because I can assure you that streamers were tossed after every Union goal during those matches where we scored one. It was kinda our thing. Fact: Again, we understand why streamers are not allowed. Fact: Our guys were booted without a warning and were threatened to have their season tickets yanked by security. Fact: Had we been asked/told/warned/threatened before the Colorado match not to throw streamers, that would have been the end of it. Fact: Because nothing was said the previous 10 home matches, we figured this was a turn-a-blind-eye-thing, especially since everyone loved it and everyone was starting to be conditioned to seeing streamers lofted whenever Seba's sweet, sweet feet put one in the back of the net. The kids in 101 and 102 loved it. Fact: There are probably a number of things that are verboten at PPL that are done that people could be kicked out for. Streamers are only dangerous to you if your name is Freddy Montero. If so, one glancing swipe of a streamer tail will send you crumbling to the ground. I apologize if you are named Freddy Montero. Fact: Though we understand that streamer throwing was illegal, we feel that we should have been given a warning before our folks were kicked out/threatened, especially since nothing had been said before. We were just having fun and trying to create a fun environment in 101. Fact: All of the security guards, except for one who will remain descriptionless, were cool with our guys after the perp walk and said they escorted our guys out reluctantly, they thought what we were doing was cool, and that they were just doing their jobs. Understandable. I would like to note that the ZZ Top looking security guy was really cool and let our guys watch the last minutes of the match on TV. Fact: We have a gaggle of brothers in our group. One of them took the rap for the whole family and security escorted him out. Not being satiated, security returned. Before security had a chance to pluck some more from their seats the rest intentionally threw streamers in protest knowing that they would be escorted out because if their brothers were going down, they were going down too. Fact: One of our guys got booted and threatened and never threw one streamer. Fact: We laughed about it in the parking lot afterwards. Fact: We love the support from 101-102 giving us the "We Want Streamers" chant and we're working on t-shirts to commemorate the occasion. Fact: We hope everyone in 101-102 remembers to cover their beverages after the next Union goal so as not to sully their Miller Lites with confetti. Legal right? Unless Montero's playing 'cause one could land in his hair and throw him off balance. COME ON THE UNION!!! Oh when the Saints, throw confetti, Oh when the Saints throw confetti, No we won't throw no more streamers, Because the Saints throw confetti!
only said it for the obvious reason, being that everyone already expected it out of me anyway COME ON CONFETTI *clap clap* COME ON CONFETTI *clap clap* COME ON CONFETTI COME ON CONFETTI COME ON CONFETTI *clap clap*
bump The confetti will be flying tomorrow! Since this will be the first league game since "The Streamer Incident", I thought I'd revive this. I am cutting up my remaining streamers into small strips. I think I'm just going to load up a few small bags and throw it by hand until I come up with a better way to do it. We'll see how it goes. They guy in front of me may just end up with a crepe paper shower. Its supposed to be a little windy too.
Take tissues and fill them with confettei and then tape the top, put small cuts unto the tissue so when you throw it the tissue will explode/open up and spread at a higher level! Just make tissue as weak as possible where it is just strong enough to hold together for the throw!
Just make sure if you bring in any sort of confetti or streamers next year get there three hours early for security to go over them with a fine tooth comb. But make sure you have a signed form from the front office and the sons of Ben elders(what a joke to call yourself elders) to make sure your not stealing their thunder. My tickets are in 101. I was there for the incident and the way security handled it was complete shat. With all these censored chants(do only SOB approved chants)and rules it's time for the majority to let the front office know how we feel. I want our SS to be the loudest most intimidating fans in the MLS.
Us SOBs are definitely the enemies. They let us use as many streamers as we want. Flares, too! Get over yourself.
