I will try to keep this going all year. A thread for the legendary Real Oviedo, a club who even competed in UEFA Cup in the past but has since fallen from grace, sinking to the Tercera División. Last year, they narrowly missed promotion to Segunda B. This year they are in Group II of Tercera. A club with a very passionate fanbase, they regularly draw very large crowds even in Tercera (reminds me of my beloved Napoli...).

    Oviedo results thus far:

    1: Lealtad Oviedo 0-2

2: Oviedo Gijón Ind. 3-1 (a win over hated rivals Gijon, but the wrong Gijon...)

    3: Andes Oviedo 0-2

    4: Oviedo Mosconia 2-1

    5: Hispano Oviedo 1-0

Tercera Group II Current Standings Round 5:

How difficult is it to get promoted out of Tercera A? Segunda B seems incredibly difficult to get promotion, is Tercera A about the same or worse? Also, where is Oviedo?

Oviedo is in Asturias, near Gijon.

Getting promoted out of Tercera is different than Segunda B it seems, but difficult no less. They seem to have a playoff system where the top finishers of the numerous groups (there are 18 total!) playoff against each other in small groups of 4, with each winner getting promoted. Last year, Oviedo lost the final of their group on away goals.

    Hello!

First of all, THANK YOU a lot for informing in this international forum of the results of my beloved Real Oviedo.

I wanna tell you that you can find all the info concerning Real Oviedo at its official website: http://www.realoviedo.es and at the forum http://www.oviedin.foro.st , which is the meeting point of all the Oviedo supporters on the Internet.

Also, I have to say yesterday Real Oviedo won clearly against Ceares, another team from Gijón: 0-3, with goals of Rubén, Juan González and Luismi.
Next week we'll play against the 'B' team of our rival team, Sporting de Gijón.

Some other facts about us: some of our best players are the Venezuelan goalkeeper Rafa Ponzo (he was selected for the national team this summer), the defenders Nacho, Urízar and Paul, the midfielders Benjamín, Jon Carrera and Michu (a BIG promise) and all of our 4 great attackers: Aldeondo (played in Primera with Real Suciedad), Darío (maximum scorer at the moment), "Juanchi" González (a player who was in Real Oviedo in Primera and now is back with us) and of course Diego Cervero, the idol of the Carlos Tartiere crowd, a player who does just everything he can for the club.

Average attendance in the Nuevo Carlos Tartiere stadium is about 6000-7000 people, but in some matches it grows up to 10,000...and even 20000 (2003/04 promotion final). Oviedo has a population of 200000.

Last year we couldn't win promotion to 2ªB last year because of just one away goal, but we also had very bad referees in the final of the promotion.
The team that won us, Arteijo, is now last in their Segunda B group.

We were 1st in regular league with 84 points, even though we had to start with -6 because of a FIFA sanction.

The city council created a new team, the ACF (better known as Engendro), trying to make Real Oviedo dissappear. When we played against them for the first time, it was just incredible...see it here: http://www.symmachiarii.com/11enero.htm
(This team was called Astur before our stupid Mayor turned it into ACF)

The Ultra group of Real Oviedo is Symmachiarii. They have done a lot of work for the club since we fell to the Tercera. They're one of the best groups of Spain.

TOMORROW, November 8th, it will be one year since the horrible death of our young player Armando Barbón in a car accident. RIP :(

I also wanna put on record that OVIEDO IS THE CAPITAL OF ASTURIAS, and Gijón is just a village (aldea) 28 km north...so it's they who are near Oviedo, and not vice versa :D . And Real Oviedo has got a better history and better supporters that Sporting de Gijón.

I was going to put some photos of the team and the crowd, but it seems like I'm not allowed to do it. So look for them in the official website, Oviedin.com and the Symmachiarii website

You can ask me anything you want about Real Oviedo.

    WE'LL COME BACK, ¡HALA OVIEDO!

    And of course, FORZA NAPOLI!

A link in www.oviedin.com has brought me here, I am another supporter of Real Oviedo - the second to post here, after my fellow Diego Cervero ;)

It's great to see such an interesting topic as this on the Internet. A huge THANK YOU goes to the author, CONGRATS MATE!!!

First of all, we must remark that Real Oviedo is undergoing its present sorry state due to certain infamous evil actions.

Four seasons ago, we were playing in Primera Division...everything seemed OK, we were exhilarated with the prospect of even playing UEFA Cup again - Serbian coach, Radomir Antic made us be relegated to Segunda Division  , what an f****r . That was the beginning of our particular ordeal. It seems some evil force has put a deadly spell on us.

After that, we - the true supporters - became the only casualty. We were trapped between the political and personal crossfire from professional players (or we'd rather say "professional betrayers") and the right wing major of Oviedo, Gabino de Lorenzo, versus the former left wing RO owners, Celso González and Eugenio Prieto.

That personal, economic and political battle made us be on the verge of our death as a club.
They relegated us to the Spanish Tercera Division (Fourth Division, actually)

Our survival has been based on the fans power; we were not willing to give in without a fight - metaphorically speaking, obviously.

Nowadays, we are trying to pave the way for our return to the Spanih football elite. The drawbacks come in the form of economic problems, city council attacks and a ruthless local media siege carried out by the city council TV, Oviedo Television, and its "official" source of written propaganda, La Nueva España - the lying newspaper which the major uses to give us a bad name.

On the economic side, the club is undergoing a bankrupcy protection. Its survival depends on the approval of that process by means of the Spanish government.

Notwithstanding all this, the supporters keep on cheering the team, though these days playing in our region gives our rivals the vain and stupid possibility of laughing at us, poor bastards.

Sad but true, Real Oviedo is currently the twelfth club in the all-time table for seasons spent in Primera Division. Our 38 seasons, out of the 73 which have been on for Primera Division , confirm us as a LIVING legend.

    ¡¡¡STAY BLUE, STAY TRUE!!!

    WE SHALL BE BACK

WELCOME DIEGO CERVERO AND BLUE GIRL 78!!!

I am so glad to see other Oviedo fans on here! Never thought that would happen! Please come back often and post any comments, thoughts, pictures, opinions, etc. on the team as you have already done! And invite other people so we can give Real Oviedo one of the best and most active threads on here!

Unfortunately the only way I have of following the team is via the internet, so it would be great if you guys could give us information straight from the city itself!

I've always liked Oviedo. I can still remember a game from 1991 or so where we beat Real Madrid 1-0 at the Carlos Tartiere with a goal from Carlos. 67th minute or so. I also remember the UEFA Cup tie against Genoa, which incidentally is a club whose fans are closely linked with the fans of my team, Napoli. Seeing Oviedo in UEFA, especially against a club like Genoa, and seeing highlights of the Oviedo-Madrid game on some obscure TV show many years ago made me develop a big interest in the team. Oh, and the colors are like Italy, so that is another plus. ;)

Thank you Diego and Blue Girl for coming here and sharing your passion for the club! Please continues to do so!

I hope to hear from you guys soon!

    HALA OVIEDO!

Diego and Blue Girl, can you tell us more about Oviedo's UEFA Cup games with Genoa? Is there a formal friendship with Genoa? Just wondering since Napoli and Genoa have a formal friendship. Another thing our clubs could have in common!

It's great to see all those pics of our new Stadium packed up with devoted supporters - it holds 30,000 supporters; last June in the last match of the promotion against Arteijo, there was an attendance of nearly 20,000 fans.

The old stadium was demolished back in 2003 ; it passed away because the Mayor of Oviedo decided to do so - one more episode on the RO owners/ Mayor war - this time the casualty was our cosy home.

As regards your question about our friendship with Genoa supporters, I can't tell you much, because I didn't exchange my RO scarf with them...but I know some people have been in touch with those Genoese people they met at the match.

RO means an true identity these days, people of all ages go to cheer the team; moreover, the kind of supporters we have in the young sections are non-violent. They are mainly concerned with working on the making of flags, banners and 'tifos' - rather than fighting the other team's supporters.

    Hello!

About the Genoa question: no, we haven't got a formal friendship with them...we don't have any totally formal friendships as far as I know, or maybe with some clubs as Valladolid CF...
But, anyway, Genoa is a very appreciated team here. The tiffossi left Oviedo supporters amazed when they came to our modest but beloved stadium.

About the results, I suppose you know we won here by 1-0, with a goal of the mercenary Bango; and we lost in Genoa by 3-1, with a not very good performance by the referee (Schmidhuber, I think).

It's sad to remember those times when we reached the European elite, but we know one day we'll be back there. We deserve it!

    Other subjects...

As you know, we fell to the Tercera in August 2003 because of some missing payments to our players. We had guarantees to pay them, but they didn't accept our terms, specially our captain Oli (known here as "el cabezón"=the big head guy :p ). Those players are really hated here in Oviedo. Also our old captain, Berto. Being 42 years old, he played last year in the Mayor's team (Astur-ACF). That's what I call a mercenary!
On the contrary, we really love our new squad.

A fact I didn't mention before, is the members (I don't know if this is the correct English word, in Spanish we say "socios" or "abonados") number. At the moment we're over 12000 supporters paying!!!

And next week, as you said, we will play against the reserve team of Sporting de Gijón (Sporting B). It will be a special match for us, but it's sad to play the maximum rivality matches...against the Reserves :(

I heard the Ultra group Symmachiarii will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a tiffo.

I'll try to put pictures of that, and of the match, but it still seems like I'm not allowed to post them.

The last news to comment, is that we will play a new (for us) competition this year. As we were kicked out the Spanish Cup in the first round, we will play the Federation Cup, against Tercera and Segunda B teams of all Spain. The drawing of the first round will be made tomorrow.

    Greets,
    Hugo

    Hi Hugo,

Thanks for the information. As you can imagine, it's tough to follow Oviedo from the US, so getting information from you guys makes it much better. The only thing I was able to provide were scored, tables etc., but thanks to you guys, the thread has acquired more "color" and depth.

Yeah, Genoa fans are pretty impressive! I once saw a Napoli-Genoa game and was amazed by the display put on by our guests. Genoa is another club like Oviedo or Napoli that has fallen from grace but will one day get back to where it deserves to be.... ;)

If you want any pictures posted on here, let me know the link and I can try to do it. I managed to get some pictures posted so far, so I should be able to post others too.

We'll talk this weekend after the game!!

    Take care,
    Randy

    Hello...

I'm sorry I couldn't write here all these past days.

I hope I can write some comments about the last match tomorrow.

Next Sunday we'll play in the 4th biggest city of Asturias: Mieres, against Caudal. I'll be there and I hope to make a report for you BigSoccer people too.

    Greets!

Last Monday we played in the Hermanos Antuña stadium of Mieres (20 km away Oviedo), against Caudal Deportivo, a team that played in 2ªB last year.

The result was 1-1, in a really equalized match. More than 4000 Oviedo fans went to support the team.

Luismi scored the 0-1 in a head shot. But in the second half of the game, Caudal got the draw thank to a polemic penalty kick. The referee didn't indicate it at that moment, and he even showed the yellow card to the Caudal attacker. But after a discussion, he marked penalty... they say it actually was the correct decision. I couldn't see it well.

We're still first in the classification, with 5 average points to our hated ACF.

Next match is at home against Avilés Industrial, another ex-2ªB team.

    Greets!

Today, another really disappointing draw (1-1) against Avilés Industrial. We played really bad, the players were not actually involved in the game...

    Things are not going well.

Yes another week without a win! Looks like the team is going through a bad moment. Diego, do you think it is just a regular spell of bad form or is there more to it? Is there any crisis between the players and the coach or anything like that?

Hopefully this bad spell won't last very long. We are stil first, though our lead is reduced to 3 points.

I think, and I hope, it's just a bad form moment...

But more than condition, it's a mentality problem. As we have the best team of our league, the players relax and think the matches are won before playing them, so most of the guys have no motivation.

At least there aren't any known problems between the coach or the staff and the players. Only some supporters are a bit angry with our coach (Antonio Rivas, former Oviedo player) for the last results, but it's not actually a crisis.

Next Thursday we'll start a new (for us) competition!!! It's the Federation Cup, a tournament for teams defeated in the first round of the Copa del Rey (like Real Oviedo) and teams winning the regional phases of the competition. The teams are from Segunda B and Tercera. We'll play the first round against Promesas Ponferrada, another Tercera team, from the neighbor province of León. We'll play the home match on Thursday, and the away one, the next Wednesday.

Hope with this new competition the players get motivated, as we'll play with some teams that can be our rivals in the Promotion to Segunda B.

2-2 against Promesas Ponferrada, with goals of Benjamín and Darío. A terrible performance by the referee...

The away match will be next Wednesday. This Sunday we're playing another Tercera match against Berrón. It will be sad...as we're going to play in a sand pitch...:(
