The article seems to indicate he was somehow affiliated with the Portland Timbers, though my high school Spanish is more then a little rusty.
I think I found him. Looks like he played with the Timbers' U-23 team this past season based on some match reports. My kid went to preschool with his HS coach's grandson (small world, huh?) and I met the grandad/coach at a birthday party and he said if I ever had any questions (or wanted to talk soccer) to let him know. So, when I have time I'll drop him a line. Cool dude, the HS coach. He and his wife had never been to Latin America before Lopez signed down there and now they've been down a couple times to visit him. The coach, btw, takes absolutely no credit for developing Lopez. The kid showed up at his HS already a very good player.
